   *GOOD*

   – Nice to get the first win. Deserved, Habs were by far the better team minus the shakey third.

   – Penalty kill improvement. Big plays early in the game when Chicago had a 5 on 3, Monty with some stops.

   – Matheson is so smooth. Let’s hope he stays healthy because he is going to eat minutes.

   – Guhle was good. Yes there was that little unlucky error on the first goal.

   – Caufield quest for 50

   – Monahan, if he stays healthy he changes the whole dynamic of the team. It’s a massive if as we know from his career.

   – Can see Pearson still has a shot.

   – Like the team toughness. Seems everyone is sticking up for eachother.

   – Quietly very quietly, Gallagher had a better game.

   – Monty!

   – Evans strong strong start to the year.

   *BAD*

   – If isn’t that deep it’s just a ceremony but cmon y’all ya gotta bring out the torch. It’s became a bit of a tradition, I mean maybe they didn’t do it one year but cmon that’s like one of our traditions in a league I may add that is lacking tradition IMO.

   – Harris still a bit iffy to start the year. Nothing major no.

   – Chicago was ugly tonight. Doesn’t take away from the Habs performance at all, but they are going to obviously be near the bottom.

   – Want to see an old school powerplay. Pack the net, and just shoot the puck. Simple?

   – Dach 🙁 hope he isn’t out long.

   – Again too passive in their own end. Giving way too much space, getting away with it against weaker competition but won’t against stronger players. Incredibly passive when the other team pulls their goalie.

   With all the blocked shots and players defending each other this is a TEAM. Man they have so much heart.

    Caufield is getting 50 this year for sure if he stays healthy, hope Dach isn’t gone too long, him and Slaf was a fun combo.

    Guhle was a beast tonight also, love to see his offensive confidence continue to grow.

    Absolutely dominated the first 40, Hawks couldn’t do anything except on the PP (even there, we got the better chances) and then, we just stopped playing in the 3rd.

    Few things I noticed

    Officiating was weird.

    I really hope Dach is okay, I saw Tinordi and his knee kind of make contact. We need him.

    Cole Caufield is a god

    Savard is stink

    Newhook gonna be a favourite

    Evans looks renewed

    Xhekaj brings the heat every game

    Maybe just me but I thought Suzuki looked a little ahem.. thic in the off-season and I’ve found he looks a little sluggish to start the season. He’s never played a “fast” style but he seems to be missing a step, Caufield easily best player on that line through 2 games.

    Anderson looks like a more complete player than ever before. Not every single play dies on his stick in the o-zone if it isn’t off the rush like it used to

    Another strong game at 5-on-5; if not for Mrazek having a really good game himself, we’d probably have a few more. And the penalty kill improved.

    Obviously Dach’s injury kind of overshadows a lot of what happened. But the players mostly adjusted to his absence, and Slafkovsky and Newhook continued to play well off each other without him, which is nice to see.

    Guhle had a strong showing tonight, notwithstanding the flukey first Chicago goal.

    Montembeault did not have a good preseason, but this was a strong start to the actual season for him.

    Gallagher is really smart. Even when he loses the puck, he loses it well, towards a teammate. He’s not nearly a liability on a 4th line. I don’t care about his contract because we’re not even trying to win now. He brings something to the young team as an older pro and that’s good enough.

    Good: obviously getting a W. Monty looked solid. Newhook is extremely noticeable just about every shift yet again. Caufield goal (a sick one at that). The defensive structure was much improved, although that could also be a result of the Hawks being bad. That 4th line of RHP-Evans-Ylonen continues to impress. Both the line itself and the players individually.

    Meh: the PP. That first opportunity we got was great, so much puck movement and rotation, but after that it was very blah again. Including guys almost refusing to shoot.

    Bad: Dach, I really hope that’s just a minor injury. He’s a big part of the team and tons of fun to watch. Penalties, penalties, penalties. We gotta work on that discipline asap lol.

    Very happy with Monty’s game today.

    One area of improvement tho is I feel he allowed too many rebound. Less of those and it would have been perfect

    Is it me or Renaud Lavoie is extremely lost at all time ?

    His questions are just all over the place. He starts his question one way, does a complete 180 goes in a different direction just to end up with a question that makes no sense.

    Then repeat in French some clichés but not actually what Caufield said … I’m uncomfortable for him lol

    newhook is becoming one of my favorite players to watch. he has so much speed and skill.

    yet another monty masterclass.

    cole 82 point season incoming.

    these past few 2 games jake evans has been him low key.

    i really hope dach is okay 🙁

    also possible hot take: i felt gally looked better than last game. like he had rough moments but overall was much better. but i’ll admit i may be biased because he’s still one of my favorites.

    i love this team so much even tho they give me a heart attack every game

    Surprised no one is mentioning how Slaf had a good game even without Dach. He is actually effective now and had some good NZ play tonight. He had some good rushes today and a nice shot. Really liking his development.

    Xhekaj was insane. Looked like Shea Weber, what with the hanging out at the blue line unnoticed until shit either goes south or the puck ends up on his stick, after which he rips a 99mph shot at the poor fucker in the net. Bonus points for sitting Scorey down. Love the guy but my dude, don’t fuck with the the WiFi.

    Monty, unfortunately, has lost his spot as backup goaltender… to Jake Allen. Guy was on fire tonight, pulled off a bunch of impossible saves and looked calm and collected and like a proper 1A goalie. If performance holds, could be a Vezina contender.

    Slaf, good 1st and 3rd, feeling the goals coming. He’s not the player he was last year and it shows. Maybe work on targeting though.

    There were multiple sequences of repeated sloppy passes but I like that generally if a player misses the puck or a player’s pass is off the mark then someone else is usually nearby to go retrieve the puck to compensate for the mistake. I think in part this is due to practice and teamwork but also most players generally having good footspeed and reactions. But in my opinion, this is not something the young Habs can get away with against a better team. It kinda started to happen more often as the game progressed. But they hung on for the win at least, which was good.

    Now that I’ve seen more of Ylonen, I’ve become more impressed by him. I noticed a key blocked shot by him and instances where his speed enabled him get to a position I didn’t think he could for a possible offensive opportunity. Seems to be good defensively, can penalty kill and has the speed to be a threat for a shortie. I also recall a nice play where the Habs were hemmed in their zone and he got the puck and lobbed it out of his dzone to relieve the pressure. He seems like Lehkonen 2.0.

    Har-P was his usual very visible self. Showing his great combo of hustle and speed which led to some good scoring opportunites which unfortunately he didn’t captitalize on. Perhaps even more of a threat compared to Ylonen on the penalty kill as demonstrated by his great assist on Monahan’s shortie (again speed and hustle but also smarts). I see Har-P as Byron 2.0.

    Evans was solid as the 4th line center. Nothing much to say that anybody else hasn’t already said.

    Having talented 4th line guys like these guys who can also penalty kill and do spot duty higher up the lineup is a big asset. They will help the top offensive players spend less time on the pk and defensive situations so that they can focus more on offense. They themselves have enough offensive skill to contribute on occasion too.

    If he stays healthy Monahan will be a huge help when it comes to filling in on different lines due to injuries like in tonight’s game. As of right now I would say Monahan is actually the best player overall on this team having formerly scored over a pt/gp before even if only once. It’s hard for me to describe exactly but he just plays such a good solid game. Like I don’t feel like I have to worry when he’s on the ice.

    Dach…can only hope it’s a minor injury. It does seem like he is out to really prove something this season.

    Don’t have much to say about Pearson as I know anything about him. He scored a nice goal with a very quick release which surprised me that he could do that from the top of the faceoff circle.

    Gallagher’s issue I don’t necessarily think is footspeed or his shot. He just seems to be slow to react. Like I saw multiple times he’d get the puck then a blackhawk player would get on him and take the puck away from him with ease. In a lot of those moments I felt there was enough time for Gally to pass off the puck or at least move a bit to position himself better to protect the puck. Maybe he needs time to get his reaction time faster. I feel like this is his big obstacle now, being able to react fast enough and make quick decisions.

    Newhook is really fast or at least can accelerate very quickly. And on top of that he seems to also be able to make great passes and shots at high speed. I don’t think some of his teammates are quite aware of his high level playmaking and are perhaps surprised when he makes a high skill play that they wouldn’t normally expect. There was that nice no-look backhand pass to Caufield that stood out to me. Newhook definitely seems like a top 6 player to me in terms of physical skills and his smarts. This is not meant to be an unflattering comparison but to me he is kind of a way better version of Rem Pitlick.

    Slaf was ok. Invisible might be a bit harsh but not completely unwarranted. I recall one play where for some reason he tries to do some fancy behind the net shot from the red line that goes off the exterior side of the post instead of just skating to the front of the net and trying to jam the puck in like a power forward would. This was near the end of the game and Slaf had the space to do it but didn’t. That would’ve been a better strategy and could’ve hemmed the blackhawks in their zone even more. Instead the hawks get the puck out of the zone and deep into the Habs zone for a puck freeze and are able to pull their goalie safely. Slaf seemed reluctant to play physical for some reason. At one point it looked like he was going to bodycheck two Blackhawks into the boards but then he kind just lets off for no real reason. I was really hoping to see Slaf squash a player into another player into the glass.

    Suzuki was mostly unnoticeable. I liked him coming in to stick up for Caufield after the hit on him early on. He had that good shot block at the end of the game but in between all that I didn’t notice him much except for a very sloppy pass at his own blueline that his teammates had to bail him out on. Couldn’t really tell if he was necessarily playing poorly but nothing noteworthy from him. Perhaps just a slow start for him.

    Caufield was so ready to play hockey. Everything fans love about him was on total display although he seemed to show more stickhandling and dangling than his shot which was actually nice to see. He was quite dynamic. Caufield is the Habs’ Bedard.

    Understandably some fans do not like seeing Anderson on the first line. But I think he showed that besides his powerhorse straight-line to the net mode he does have other modes and that pass at the blueline for Caufield’s first goal was actually quite skillful. If Anderson can find that balance of making the more skilled play but also going into powerhorse mode and be more consistent with it then he could really be the 3rd wheel that can propel NiCole to higher heights. I also saw him get a good clear on the penalty kill so he isn’t as much of a one trick power horse as some fans would paint him as. In a way he’s kinda like a more motivated version of Armia even if their skillsets don’t really match up. But they’re both these big guys who have skills that aren’t usually associated with big guys.

    I am starting to see more and more why Guhle is considered to be a future 1st pairing caliber dman. Some skilled plays combined with mostly steady play. A nice big strong shove to a Hawks player against the boards at the beginning of the game helped set the tone.

    Kova was not bad although sometimes I think he doesn’t realize he has more time than he thinks to make certain decisions and sometimes could do well with making a more simple play when under pressure. In a way I almost see him as a less talented Guhle. Not necessarily noticeable but can provide steady defensive play.

    Harris was a bit of a mix of good and bad. At least based on this game I’m not sure he’s good playing on his offside. There was that one moment where he left the middle open for some odd reason and had to hook the blackhawk player that led to a penalty.

    Everybody loves Xhekaj for obvious reasons but I am starting to see why some say he needs to work on his defence. He has good enough reactions and speed to kind of make up for his mistakes sometimes but it was much clearer to me in this game how his positioning and decision making isn’t too great at times. But he can pass and has a good shot so he does have some offense and good physical skills overall. I don’t think he’ll be a top 4 but with coaching he could be as good as Kova defensively.

    I was reminded how great of a skater Matheson is. A funny moment that stuck out to me was seeing him parked behind the opposing goalie’s net with nobody appraoching him during the 4 on 4 where he’s trying to pass it out front. It was like he was thinking to himself « What would Gretzky do? »

    Similarly nothing much to say about Savard. Didn’t pay much attention to him.

    Monty controlled some of his rebounds better. Didn’t necessarily get many dangerous shots for long stretches but made some good saves when needed. Bedard pretty much missed almost all his potentially dangerous shots on Monty like he was Magneto invisibly directing his shots away from the net.

    First game at the Bell Centre tonight, amazing experience, glad I got to see a win as well.

    Hopefully the guys can tighten up at the end of the games. Was having flashbacks to our first game after they got the goal with the empty net.
