He was drafted by the Panthers, spent nine years getting paid a fortune to live in Miami and rewarded the Panthers by finishing second in scoring behind only McDavid only to be traded to Calgary (which is about as different from Miami as you can get in North America).
I have lived my whole life in Calgary. About 15 years ago, the company I was working for wanted to move me to their head office in a big US city. When my wife and I checked into it, we were stunned by how much our lifestyle would improve. Discussions were underway but then the financial crisis hit and it was cancelled. My wife and I were devastated, it took many years to just forget how close we came and, even now, we cannot bring it up without a tremendous sense of loss. I continued working at that company’s Calgary office for three more years but my productivity tanked and never recovered. Eventually, they shut down the Calgary office and I moved on to a different job.
That pales in comparison to what Huberdeau lost. I have to think he is rattled by what happened to him and question if he can recover his game as a Flame. All of the money and sports psychology isn’t going to change that.
Unfortunately, both sides agreed to a long-term contract and that, and his play, have made him unmovable. He might regain his game with another team, but not Calgary.
At least, that is my opinion on what is going on.
