Dude is so cursed, you can see the work he puts in along the boards, only for teammates to miss the net point blank, or get a tertiary assist. Needs to focus on being more prominent in the middle of the ice

I feel like Kakko could benefit if after he puts them through the spin cycle on the boards. He can take the puck close to the net and fire a shot low into the pads. Kinda just crash the net once the defender on him is on the boards

He’s actually looked very bad and hardly does the possession thing along the boards. I really thought, after some positives at the end of the season last year, that he would take a step forward this season. But he’s looked worse somehow. I don’t think the criticism is fair but it’s a fact that he got top 6 minutes and didn’t nothing.

That whole line had 5 points at 5v5 when they were broken up, and still had an xgf over 50% they were getting their chances but none of those guys were finishing. Would like to see Kakko drive the net more

The people that bash him have no clue how hockey works I don’t know if people notice scores are high like 10-12 scored. Scoring is hard and there is a shot ton more to the sport to helping a team win Kakko may not end up a huge goal scorer but guy is a huge contributor To this team

I feel like all of us (the team, media, fans) need to come to terms with Kakko being at best a 3rd liner. He’s got great possession skills, and is solid 1v1. But he’s unsure what to do with the puck frequently, and doesn’t drive offense. I can’t see him being in the top 6 and I think we all need to accept that and reset expectations. Just my 2 cents.

EDIT: Lots of downvotes in <10 minutes for sharing an opinion, cool. How about instead of just blindly downvoting, reply and counter?

EDIT 2: Of his 2pts this season, the goal was scored without an assist from either of his linemates. So he has 1pt associated with Kreider and Zibby. He’s missed 51 games out of a possible 290 in his career (18%). Has as many giveaways as takeaways this year (4). Is shooting 6.3% this year (lowest for his career). Has as many PIMs (2) as points…. Look, I love the guy and DO NOT want to trade/give up on him. I just don’t see him as our best RW and correctly slotted into the top line. I wish Laffy was there, maybe Wheels second line until Othmann arrives before season’s end, and Kakko on the 3rd line.

  7. Very happy to hear this from Zib. I’ve said this too on this sub, Kakko took the fall for something that’s not entirely on him. With our lack of RW depth, and while the rest of our team can still get us wins despite a non-producing 1L, it’s the optimal moment to build that 1L chemistry with KK. He’s young and can be coached into the role that chris/zib need for them to click. We have a good coaching staff rn, I believe it can and should be done. And in any case, wheeler should not be 1RW.

Feels like part of the reason he’s appeared less effective this year is that he’s become predictable. It’s pretty unique for a young guy to want to be a bully along the boards and it surprised a lot people, but now teams have figured out how to seal him off, particularly from getting behind the net. Its not entirely his fault, seems like he often fighting off two guys to keep the puck and there’s not much support. On the other hand, he also seems like when he gets the puck he gets tunnel vision and will only shoot or try to make a play after a certain amount of possession time. Makes me think mixing things up could really help (e.g., cutting to the middle for a quick shot/rebound, pass when the defenders move to seal off the boards).

Kakko’s issue is the same as Laf’s is/was: confidence, and the after effects of Quinn/GG. They’ve been conditioned to be 3rd line two way forwards, but they have the skills to be dynamic offensive players. Laf finally looks like the player we drafted, while Kakko still looks afraid of the Quinn bin (or like he hasn’t gotten over being scratched for Dryden Hunt)

Get him some stronger smelling salts. Shit, get him some blow, or a sports therapist. Since 2017, we’ve drafted 4 forwards in the top 10. 2 are confirmed busts, and the organization has done their worst with our 2 lotto picks.

Panarin’s hot start might be giving Laf’s career the shot in the arm it needs to take off. I would hate to break up that line, but I wonder if you would swap Laf and Kakko forna few games. A hot Laf might jump start Mika and Kreider, and a fire hydrant could probably put up a couple points playing with Panarin right now. Just a thought.

It is fair. We all know he has the talent and skill – you can see flashes of it. Problem is he can’t seem to string it together and he lacks the confidence to shoot the puck.
