McDavid is all about speed. What happens with Speed in the NHL as players age. If you do not adapt your game drastically you become ineffective. Ask Crosby and Malkin. I prefer Draisaitl long term to McDavid. More odds of Leon winning a Cup because he can slow down the play like Kucherov and Sid.
McDavid carries no blame. He is one of the few Oilers that plays with passion every shift. For commentators to suggest is not giving 100% is just plain stupid. Typical of sports casters who have never been in McDavid's shoes. There is so much boring, think I know it all, armchair quarterbacking and podcast "talk" (read we got nothing of substance to say, so lets attack Connor McDavid today) that one wonders how educated are sports "commentators." These guys should get a real job,, rather than belonging to a nitpicking , vacuous coffee circle.
Yes. He is a generational talent up front. He wouldn't even make the NHL with his defense liability. He doesn't want to nor care to do anything the defensive zone. You can score 20 goals a game, but when you give up 30, you still suck.
I have been saying this for years and my comments about this have been getting deleted on this channel for years…I got the feeling you simply aren't allowed to criticize Connor McDavid and that people want to have the delusional opinion that he is perfect because he is so talented. My criticisms were not saying McDavid was a bad player and I do think when he is playing well, the good he does offensively outweighs the bad part of his lack of effort defensively…however, that is all well and good if your goal is to put up individual points and win individual trophies…if you want to win in the playoffs and win the Stanley Cup, not making the defensive effort is simply not good enough. Your top line players and leading scorers have to play a 2 way game just like everyone else if you want to win the Stanley Cup, it is as simple as that.
I have brought up the same players as examples over and over as well. Steve Yzerman, Joe Sakic, Mike Modano, Pavel Datsyuk, were all guys that started out their careers as 1 dimensional offensive players and even though they put up good numbers, they struggled to win and they got upset in the playoffs a number of times by weaker teams. But all of them learned to play a 2 way game and went on to cement their legacy as champions who were tough to play against later in their careers. There was an interview with Steve Yzerman, where he specifically said he didn't get it early in his career and it wasn't until he started playing a 2 way game that he truly understood what it took to win.
And then you look at guys like Sergei Fedorov, Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane, Jonathon Toews, Brad Marchand…these are guys that played a 2 way game right from day 1 in their careers and they all won the Stanley Cup very early in their careers. Fedorov was so good defensively that Detroit actually dressed him a defenseman at least once just because he wanted to try playing as a Dman. And for anyone who thinks you need to be big to have an impact defensively, I think Patrick Kane destroys that argument with all the monster defensive plays he has in his highlight reel while being one of the smallest players to ever play in the NHL.
The bottom line is, McDavid is a great player…he probably skates better than anyone ever has and he is able to make plays at top speed like no one ever has. His acceleration from full stop to top speed is mesmerizing and the way he switches gears up and down and back up would be enough to put fear in the eyes of the best stalwart defensive monsters that have ever played the game. But at the same time, if he is hanging out at the redline while the other team has the puck in his defensive zone, he's contributing to his team getting scored on. Right now when McDavid is on the ice, it is more likely that the other team will score than he will. If you contribute to more goals against your team than you contribute to for your team, you are losing hockey games no matter how many points you put up. And McDavid skates so well and is able to make plays at top speed that there is no need for him to be hanging out up by the redline, there is no need for him to be cherry picking…McDavid could start out from behind his own net and people still won't be able to stop him from creating good things offensively.
I'm critiquing McDavid's defensive game because he says he wants to win the cup, but he himself as the Oilers captain is not doing what needs to be done as their leader. The Oilers are bad as a team defensively, not just McDavid…I have seen 4 out of 5 members of the Oilers leave the defensive zone early and head up ice before the Oilers even have possession of the puck in their own end as they just assumed the guy going to get the puck would obtain it and nothing bad would happen. This actually happened last year and sure enough, the last man back gets to the puck first, but the other team steals the puck from him because he was under pressure and had no safe outlet pass. The other team passes the puck out front of the net for an easy goal. The whole team is bad at defense and team concepts start from your leadership and it is on the shoulders of your team leadership to hold players accountable. It is kinda hard for a captain to hold players accountable for something if they are not willing to do it themselves however. On the flip side if the rest of the team sees McDavid putting in a lot of effort in the defensive end and playing tough minutes, most of them are probably either going to be inspired, or feel obligated to follow his lead.
They need better defense and goaltending, but I also think they need to bring in a leader like O'Reilly to help forge the culture of those fragile team
McDavid needs to be held accountable for his poor performance.
The blame has been shifted to everyone else on the oilers this season except him. He isn’t scoring enough, not enough PP production, AND is a defensive liability.
He is the captain, it’s time to take responsibility for the losses.
Yes he is part to blame, but the nhl officials are also part to blame. I’m not even a oiler fan, but I watch the oiler vs canes and the ref really helped the canes a lot.
Its Hollands fault for the way the team is constructed, its a ALL offensive minded built team. His so called additions have been either boom or bust. Zach Hyman Evander Kane excellent boom Mattias Ekholm a excellent player but the cost of his addition was way too high imo , for it robbed us of our best right shot skating defenseman Tyson Barrie our # 1 prospect Reid Schaefer & a #1 draft pick? Hollands tenure has been a unmigitaded disaster. No goaltending of a proven pedigree. Darcy Kuemper recent Cup winner was available & Ken chooses Jack Campbell. Sean Durzi was available for trade this last summer Arizona gets him, Matt Dumba signs as a free agent with Arizona. Holland again ignores this player. Look at Arizona's improvement. Holland has made countless bad contracts to players on this club and has left himself but more importantly the team with no cap space room.
It happens to the best of them. Crosby knows what it’s like, after he had a slump he won two cups in a row. McDavid will be fine, he is too good not too.
I heard one “pundit” suggest the Oilers need to “toughen up”. Does anyone believe that the solution to the poor defense and inconsistent goaltending is to add a few thugs to the lineup? With the modern era rules against instigation, all that strategy is going to do is give the other teams more power plays against them.
NOPE!! KEN HOLLAND DESERVES ALL THE BLAME FOR THIS FIASCO! THE TEAM IS POORLY BUILT. WE SHOULDVE RESIGN KOSTIN AND BJUGSTAD, AND NEVERMIND SIGNING BROWN, GAGNER AND RYAN..
I think the best thing that could happen to him would be having someone who makes sense like Crosby or Marchand take the C from him so he can just play. There really isn't any other lower level player to take the C and not have it be a complete joke on a team with McDavid.
This is what eventually happens when you build a team around 2 players and way overpay a 3 pair defenseman. The game has evolved to a 4-line game and the Oilers built a team with one line no defense and piss poor goaltending.
McDavid and Draisaitl BOTH need to learn a 200ft game. Instead of skating away when they cough up the puck they need to fight to get it back. Haven't seen any of that, they need to set good examples and not just skate to the bench with their heads hung low.😡
Absolutely. Also the franchise should not be letting a player call the shots. He rushed himself back from an injury. He rushed the team back to practice during important rest time. He rushed the franchise to fire the coach. This player should not be in control of franchise decisions
It is 100% his fault. If they are winning he is the only player on that team any fan gives credit to and now that he isn't doing anything they all of a sudden think they need everything else lol. He is definitely leaving edmonton
Looks like McCrybaby and Leon Peesaitl are falling off 🤣🤣can't even make playoffs. I knew from the moment they were drafted this team would amount to nothing. Bunch of frauds 💀💀💀💀

McDavid has such bad attitude and body language.
OILERS SUCK. THEY ARE A JOKE..

He’s definitely no Gretzky
Heavy is the head that wears the crown.
You learn MORE from your failures then your accomplishments
I love Hockey. It's such a team sport
McDavid needs to be a leader and help more with the defensive effort in this time of need for the Oilers.
Connor and Leon have been terrible this year

Frankie need to put down his poker face. This does not looks normal

TSN having a field day as usual. The Oilers suck but let’s face it so does the American bias league!

Oilers were always one dementional and over rated

No. The Oilers are to blame for destroying McDavid's spirit. If you try to race a dead horse, the smell will eventually get to you.
NOPE!! KEN HOLLAND DESERVES ALL THE BLAME FOR THIS FIASCO! THE TEAM IS POORLY BUILT. WE SHOULDVE RESIGN KOSTIN AND BJUGSTAD, AND NEVERMIND SIGNING BROWN, GAGNER AND RYAN..
All the money equals some responsibility
Pay him more

So UnacceptaFULL!
Connor McDavid should be aloud to just play hockey and not have to be Captain too
Everyone has to take ownership on why their playing like crap. Ken Holland needs to be fired so fire him and get someone that knows what their doing.
Trade him now for a haul. They need a goaltender and blueliners. Badly.
McDavid has been playing pretty terribly given his standards, but he at least has an excuse with the injuries he picked up at the start of the year
its really hard for the oilers to win games though when 12.5m of their cap isnt scoring
at least he's starting to look more like himself in the last 2 games
I knew when eichel dominated McDavid in the playoffs shutting him down and then leading Vegas to the cup McDavid would struggle.
Did anybody stop to think he might be playing hurt

Vancouver traded captain Horvat
Calgary traded captain Gaudreau
Montréal traded captain Pacioretty
Ottawa traded captain Karlsson
Hmmm…it has been trending across Canada..
Absolutely love how the fan base keeps making excuses for the "captain s" lack of productivity because of some phantom injury !

He's a bad captain
BOS recieves: Leon Draisaitl, Ryan McLeod
EDM recieves: Linus Ullmark, Matt Grzelcyk, Matt Poitras, 1st round pick
Just because you get the most points doesn't mean you are the best player. Defense first. Offence is the reward for for great defence.
McDavid is a bum. He is no longer a superstar. Getting paid that much to float around on the ice.
McDavid and Draisaitl are the Mike Trout & Shohei Ohtani of the NHL. Two of the best players on an awful team
two players have defined oilers game that's the problem. bring Hitch or Tort's in
