I understand the regulation wins thing but on the flip side you could also say the Leafs have only lost 6 in regulation out of 21 games. I feel like if lack of regulation wins is bad then logically you’d also have to say the lack of regulation losses is good?

The team is finding ways to get points right now, ultimately that’s what you want early in the season. So mission accomplished in that respect.

It’s also absolutely true though that their overall play has been significantly less than inspiring, and they’ve got a long, long way to go.

They’ve got plenty of time to get working on it.

The team not being able to win in regulation is a concern to me though, especially in playoffs when it’s sudden death OT and no shootouts, we need to start winning in regulation especially to other Atlantic teams, we can’t be giving teams breathing down our necks any points

  4. This whole thing with regulation wins to me is a good example of how the media in Toronto impacts the team. It started with a random tweet a few weeks ago, got circulated around to the point where now they were talking about it on the broadcast and now asking players about it.

You can kind of tell with the reactions to such questions after the game yesterday (McCabe and Keefe) that this stupid stat has wormed its way into the conversation. In any other market a team that is 6-1-1 and just got off the ice of an exciting win would expect some positive interactions with reporters.

The worst thing is, once this specific stat is resolved it will just be something else.

My concern is that a lot of these regulation ties are due to the leafs going up early and then blowing a lead. They manage to win it in OT or shootouts but that’s not a good pattern.

A few years ago they were complaining that leafs are losing a lot of 1 goal games. Now they’re winning them and it’s no good

Yeah, it’s fine to enjoy W’s, but at the same time, Regulation wins are a major predictor of future success. They’ve been treading water and banking points, which is great, but right now they’re not playing near where they can/need to if they want to do anything when it matters.

I don’t know what’s been going on with Auston, but hopefully him and Mitch figure things out (Mitch took a great first step last night, but Auston’s got 3 hat-tricks this year, so I’m not exactly hanging my hat on that right now), and we can get a bit of help in the way of another top-4 D-man (or two) and another mid-6 forward (preferably a C).

This team should be able to carry play far better than it has, and I’m not super worried about them unless the trend continues into the new year

If they were winning by large margins and losing in ot the narrative would be they can’t win tight games.
