  1. Cozens states the obvious…but it’s been that way. Last year deficiencies could be overlooked due to a high-octane offense. Not the case this year (even before Tage’s injury) and Clifton/Greenway have not been answers, at all.

  2. Kinda hard to tell with Carlsson as he might've had a good career even if they played him every night in his rookie season. How would you even know if this strategy made him worse?

  3. The TDA-Orlov pair was not working so well 5-on-5. TDA on the Flyers last season suggests a team needs an above average D to cover in order to take advantage of TDA's offense, as Slavin did with TDA two seasons ago. Carolina does not want to break Slavin-Burns or Pesce-Skjei. That said, before last night Carolina was 1 for 21 on power plays without TDA as QB and that 1 was a shot directly off a faceoff win compared to 15 for 58 with TDA in the game. Because there is a question of Pesce's contact future in Carolina I could see a move at the trade deadline and TDA gets back in the lineup. Impossible to guess about trades now however without knowing more about goalie Andersen's health and who might be available next spring.

  4. The Leo Carlsson development arc is really fascinating to me, at glance it makes a ton of sense at least physiologically/developmentally from a training/recovering perspective. I also wonder if having fewer games and more time to reflect on the games played could be a sort of hidden bonus? Totally nerding out over here :p

  5. Dang Flames really upgraded their locker room over the past week trading out a negative guy who wanted out and bringing in known funny guy mark pysyk

  6. Such a shame to hear Reichel is getting healthy scratched this far into season. Hope this awakens something in him, and not take away more confidence. I know I previously wondered if he needed some time back in AHL, but I really don't want that to be the case. He showed such promise every game last season, and I wonder if the attempt to make him into a center messed with his progress.

  7. Beauvillier could play in Winnipeg because he is a Canadian citizen, he doesn't "have his Canadian work visa". He needs a work visa to play in the U.S. as a Canadian, but he doesn't need a work visa to play in his country of birth.

  8. I have a feeling Pat Verbeek is planning on sending Leo to the WJC.. maybe.. as a experience stint. he would miss 5 scheduled NHL games, and with the current load management, that would be 3-4 games.
and why would he send him to WJC? he would participate in high pressure games, possibly a gold medal game on home ice. that experience is not something to sniff at. if the core purpose of the load management is development, it does makes sense to send him to the WJC.

  9. A lot of teams got better from last year and I really don't see Buffalo as improved. Maybe a little regression. As a Canuck fan I guess it was not really all a toughness thing it was direction. Buffalo does not seem to have a compass. Or identity. Thought they were starting to have one and lost it. Who is the leader of the Sabers? Not playing with a lot of team confidence. And not playing on the same page. Under achieving a lot.

  10. Reichel just isn't looking the same as he was last year (granted not many players look as good as when they play w Kane and Toews), demoting him a line or two or a even league until next season is the best thing

  11. If a canadian player without a work visa is on a canadian team why don't they need a work visa to enter the us and vice versa? like shouldnt he already have it bc he had to play games before in the us..? maybe its not required

  12. 11 points in 22 games. Cozens could be better. But, I'd say it's in the bottom 6 where the Sabres really seem to be falling off a cliff.

  13. The Sabres are and have been easy to play against for years. Years. The Sabres have had subpar goaltending for years. Years. The Sabres have drafted the same tiny, skilled forwards for years and have failed with them for years. Years.
    Fire Adams.
    Fire Granato.

  14. Re: Leo Carlsson, the New York Islanders did something pretty similar with Noah Dobson in his rookie year, and Dobson is turning into a franchise defensemen for the team now. Not quite Makar or Hughes level but he's very very good.

  15. Buffalo's coach is the root of all the problems. Granato coaches a soft team that has no grit. They way over achieved last year off of Thompsons explosion and the gm not addressing the lack of grit and goaltending during the off-season is biting them in the ass now.

  16. Until the Pegulas cease to be owners of the Sabres, they're going to indefinitely be spinning their wheels. Them being too easy to play against is very old news. This is the same old story we've now seen for so many years in a row.

  17. As a sabres fan, i really think Granato's mindset just isn't what the team needs. If we lose to nashville today, and honestly regardless, he should go. Hire Evason! he could be a good fit for a team needing to be tougher

  18. To be honest Cozens plays like a crap himself this year. So many regressing players from last season. Even Dahlin's not very good . Power soft as a puff pastry.

  19. I think the Carlson strategy is wise, especially considering the fact that he isn’t fully grown yet (Killorn said on Spittin Chiclets podcast that doctors had seen on an X-ray that Carlson still has a few inches left to grow).

Excessive load/overuse when the skeleton isn’t yet fully developed is what doctors believe often cause the bone deformities that often lead to hip impingement problems for athletes. Imo decreasing the risk of him needing to deal with that (what Backstrom, Kane and many others in the league have been struggling with) is enough to motivate going slow
