There is a big difference between 27 games and 82 games but I think more people need to recognize how hard it is for a player to be playing at 70 point pace as a rookie.
Players with 70 or more points in their rookie season since the last lockout:
Matthew Barzal (Draft +1) – 85 points in 82 games
Artemi Panarin (24 yo) – 77 points in 80 games
Auston Matthews (Draft Year) – 69 points in 82 games
Three players have been at essentially 70 points in their first season. Only two actually hit it and the two that did didn’t do it in a post draft season. Barzal got sent back to juniors after playing two games in his draft year and Panarin was our great « are you still a rookie when » story. There are other players who put up 70+ points overall while still recognized as a rookie because of games played requirements (most notably perpetual rookie Michael Bunting with 77 points in 105 GP)
