Très bien, soyons réalistes à propos des Oilers

  1. They are still definitely in the playoff race but you have to think they need to be playing above .500 to have a shot.

The team seems built to outscore their problems in a sort of throwback to the 80s, but when McDrai aren't going the team's identity and confidence kind of disappear. Apparently they have some of the top defencemen in the league based on advanced stats, but the eye test tells me that they still can't defend the slot. Just a confusing team.

  2. The thing is, outside of McDavid and Hyman there is no offensive pairing producing goals on a ceompetitive level. Mostly thats because Draisaitl plays with wingers who underperform most of the games, like Brown, Janmark, Foegele and RNH. Drai isnt putting up the best season at all, so it all comes down to McD and Hymes, goaltending and special teams (which includes Bouch, Drai and RNH). Under these circumstances its a flipcoin whether they make the postseason, I personally think, they will achieve the postseason. But if you take the games against FLA and TB you may have realized, how important a stellar goalie would be for this team. The game against TB – switch goalies, Skinner for Tampa and we wouldmhave Vasi, I almost guarantee that would have won this game by 13-6. FLA its the same, we would have won by 8-6.

  3. Lets be honest here, as much as McDavid finally being McDavid was a factor in their winning streak the main reason for their winning was that they finally got some quality goaltending. Skinner seems to be defined by the first ten shots of the game, when Skinner starts off well he plays well but when a team can pop two or three on him in the first ten shots look out because Skinner has more holes than a teenage girl's blue jeans. Also you can't ignore the improved play of Evan Bouchard, especially on the PP; it seems like just yesterday that every single Oilers fan wanted Bouchard either traded or sent down and then he went on a how many game point streak … yeah

  4. We really just need a solid goaltender.. Skinner is a good backup but keeping him as a starter is going to cost us.. I really hope Ken can pull off some kind of magic

  5. One often overlooked factor in the Oilers' turnaround is that Eckholm looks like himself again. He missed the preseason with injury and didn't seem to be 100% early on, but he's back now. When Eckholm plays well Edmonton's defense is tighter, the goalies come under less pressure, and Bouchard's defensive lapses are less likely to end up in the net. It makes a difference.

  6. Edmonton reminds me of a SEC football team from the 2000's: all offense and no defense, just going out and putting up enough points hoping it was enough to outlast the other guy. When the offense struggled to produce, all the sudden the defensive woes became blatantly obvious. There is zero chance that McDavid and  Draisaitl can maintain the pace necessary to cover up their defensive issues for the remainder of the season and make the playoffs. It's just too large a hill to climb.

  7. I can shamelessly say I'm rooting for their downfall, not because I dislike the Oilers or anything I just think it'd be so funny if Edmonton never wins a cup with arguably the best player to ever play

  8. Yeah, good observations. I don't know what's happening with Drai. He has been way colder than hotter this season. Even during that 8-game winning stretch, you didn't see much of him in the highlight reels. I love the guy when he plays the way he CAN play, but a lot of games, I feel like he's just given up. Oilers fans would probably hate me for saying this, but I honestly think they should trade him and get a couple of quality players in return. It seems like he'd be happier on a new team, and he's a hot enough commodity right now that the Oil might just come out on the winning end of this. Just a thought.
