Hope he gets his groove back and builds on what was otherwise a good career. Best of luck Sammy.

  2. ZachKearns

Best of luck Samsonov. Seems it’s all mental. Hope he can get back to where he was even a year ago.

  3. Suspicious_Basis9925

No one’s picking 3.5 AAV up for an AHL fringe

  4. Release the Hildebeast!

(Sammy is only signed for this year, he’s not a cap dump. If we want to acquire a top 4 D he will be used as salary filler in a trade. For now he’s just going to try and find his games with the Marlies)

  5. Volderon90

No one will claim him, sucks for Sammy but we literally can’t afford to play him

  6. SynthRysing

I wonder if he’ll pick up skills that Woll and Hildebeast have picked up with them being Leafs prospects and Sammy coming over from Washington.

  7. wageslave_999999999

WOW, expected but my god from hero to zero in record time in Toronto

  8. Arcade23

Hopefully he can play in the AHL and get his mojo back.

  9. Throwaway7219017

It would be really, really nice if the hockey gods allowed Hildeby to become a franchise goalie.

It was a smart play to take Samsonov to arbitration. That way we didn’t overpay for longer term in case it didn’t work out (as it seems to be as of now) and we were able to work some cap magic with Murray as a result. Sucks for our cap hit this season, but big picture it was the right move.

People didn’t like it at the time but I think Treliving did good there.

I wonder who will play the back to back? Maybe the beast and maybe a trade? Who knows

  12. algofort

Highly highly doubt he gets claimed personally… teams only love to claim our cheap players we try to bypass the waiver system. Not the ones we want them to claim.

Tough and sad. Personally, Samsonov has never been my favorite. Too unstructured and less receptive to controlling rebounds than Woll and even Murray since we got him. He’s just not my guy. Still feel bad it hasn’t worked. We need structure and stability. Fingers crossed it comes.

  13. Para5yte

Ok that means they’re calling someone up or woll might be back?

  14. Monumental fall from grace, staggering.

Leafs management did not see this. But the signs were there during the Panthers series.

  15. Falconflyer75

Well it worked well for Jones, here’s hoping it does the same for Sammy

Maybe they even call him up in a future game and he saves us (though of course I don’t want Jones or Woll to get hurt)

  16. RudyGiulianisKleenex

I am so psyched we only have this guy on contract for this year

  17. boyBookchin

I’ll reserve my judgement until we find out what Tre is doing next. So many questions…

  18. ElephantShell34

Imagine we had signed Samsonov to a multi year extension. Could have been a disaster beyond just this season.

  19. Big_Albatross_3050

Had to be done, I have no idea what happened, because you don’t go from being in Vezina conversations and posting routine shut outs to having a .700 sv% even with a noticeable dip in defence

  20. JamesCurtis24

There’s about 3-4 goaltenders in the league at any given time who are worth investing lengthy terms in.

Every other goalie should not be given more than like 1-3 years at most. The position is too volatile. The absolute right move was made with Sammy and I also fully supported letting Campbell go.

  21. Redneckshinobi

So many of you want Hildeby to come up and Im glad none of you are the gm. You can’t stunt development of a goalie just for lawls or because you want to test him. Goalies need to work of their game and him finding it in the AHL is exactly where he needs to be right now getting games under his belt. Sitting as a backup on our bench and practice isn’t going to help him.

They say Samsonov plays well in practice and doesn’t translate to games, it’s not the same at all. We have done this soo many times in the past with our prospect goalies, stop suggesting we fuck another kids career because you think he’s ready, let him fucking develop.

  22. It really is wild to see how bad it’s gotten for Samsonov. He went from helping the Leafs win a playoff series in almost two decades to being put on waivers in less than a year.

Really disappointing to see that it’s come to this.

  23. Chtholly13

his play in preseason already had me concerned and it carried onto the regular season.

  24. krazykanuck

Man, I hope someone doesn’t claim him! It would really screw over the leafs! Gosh, wouldn’t that just be the worst luck! Some GM with a bone to pick with the leafs would sure make us look bad by claiming him!…

  25. DrinkMoreBrews

Is this karma for collectively laughing at the Campbell/Edmonton ordeal a few months back?

  26. Barilko-Landing

At this point I feel like the leafs are serving him the professional courtesy of a fresh start while he’s still their employee for the rest of the year. It’s so frustrating that we’ve essentially just lost a starting goalie with no return for it whatsoever, in a league that’s starved for goaltendin. If you told me that he would fall off like this after his stellar numbers last year I would only slightly worry you were right, because… Leafs.

  27. world_citizen7

Can they really bring someone up due to cap reasons? If samsonov is on the Marlies, they only save like a million bucks, so they are still cap-strapped, no??

  28. Barilko-Landing

Now here’s a thought. Emphasis on thought because I’m not sure I really believe it but maybe it would be an interesting discussion…

Obviously treliving looks like a genius taking him to arbitration and only signing a one year extension. After his performance last year and the importance of his role coming into a season where team defence took a notable decline with lost personnel, one would think that he probably expected to at least be given some term and security. But after arbitration – a process other former players have recalled as essentially a round table of harsh criticism and serious reality checks – all of the sudden, he’s been told he’s still a risk and not proven as a starter, « show us one more good year, then we’ll talk ».

Next thing you know, he looks like a shell of his former self, his whole demeanor is different. He had a kid, and obviously that is a whole seperate type of stress on a man’s life when he’s away from home and fighting for his family’s long term financial security…

Again, just interested to hear your thoughts, but do you think the source of Sammy’s loss of confidence is a direct result of the arbitration process?

  29. itaintbirds

All this faith in Woll is entirely premature in my opinion. I think we may be in trouble

  30. joerph713

After what happened in the playoffs last season it seems obvious this was inevitable.

  31. TheGardiner

I’m really surprised this happened. I’m not against it, I’m just surprised that this glacially slow organization pulled the trigger on something like this so fast.
