Leafs goal tending and D has looked like a team when its rebuilding.
Nobody's saying 5'10" 18yr old Bedard is just a kid. It's only a pressure cooker in the medias eyes. Give the 22yr old goalie a chance. Samsonov is the reason the Leafs are where they are in the standings.

This is a desperation move for sure – but one that is necessary as well given the Leafs cap room. The JT contract is the cause of all of this hot mess.
Keefe needs to wake up and take game management and structure as an essential part of the game. Relying on the core four to outscore their blunders night in and night out is not a winning strategy. Might want to start with simple fundamentals as line changes, D-zone exits and O-zone entries…so far they are pathetic in all three. What a waste of talent. Leafs need a coaching change more than they need a goalie in my opinion.
Did geno play in the NHL? 18 year Olds can why not 22.
Sparky was good in AHL too…how did that turn out?

I thought Samsonov was doing okay. In his last game he gave the Blue Jackets a run for their money. They were having an impossible time trying to hit him with the puck…

It's worth the risk, it's either that or pay a premium for a sub par goalie, the market for goalies is horrible right now.

Had to make the move. Hope it pays off. Hope Samsonov finds what's missing in his head. Start Hildeby slowly so he doesn't get shell shocked. Leafs should also continue with the youth kick and move Robertson up to the 2nd line. The Bertuzzi experiment is over. He'll have less than 20 goals in a season he's played with 4 of the top guys in the league. Not good enough. Not his fault, though. The problem is Treliving thinking this guy was any more than a 3rd or 4th line grinder. Move him and Kampf for a decent D. Sign Nylander!
I predict that Sammy will be the highest paid back-up in the AHL, unless Campbell beats him to it.

It's not a risk. I am sure the Leafs have explored the trade market. All rookies have a starting point, a first game. Give him the opportunity, Woll should be back in February. You are trying to create controversy where there is none

Would not want to be a Leaf goalie. Ilya will need therapy for a year to recover from shoddy D and unforgiving media on every mistake.

I don't think Keefe is lying here or anything, I think Hildeby is the second guy. They know Jones can make the stops necessary to win games, the main concern with him is match load. So give Hildeby maybe 2 or 3 starts before Woll comes back but no need to start him every game, especially since it's still only the half way point of the regular season. Plenty of time to get things settled once Woll is back. For now just ease him into the NHL. Let him dip his toes and keep an eye on how he reacts to the extra pressure.
If any oldschool fans can remember, Felix Potvin made a deep playoff run with Toronto as a rookie goaltender in 92-93

The Toronto Maple Leaf's are like Stan Mikita's Chicago Blackhawks, full of talent didn't play as a team and only won one Stanley cup. You build a team from the back end forward.
I don't care what they were on paper, at the beginning of the year. It's the Maple Leafs. Anyone who picked them as cup favourites is not paying attention to the last 50 + years.
Toronto has no other choice. Rember someone name Mike Palameter. He was a rookie he let the Leafs into a great playoff run
Let it sink in that once Woll returns the leafs are banking on two rookie goalies to save their season. They desperately need to make a trade for a veteran
This kid can't be any worse than Samsonov. The Leafs have been playing with a hot potato net years now, it's gonna burn them sooner than later if they don't figure things out here soon, like real quick. They can't keep throwing points/games away.
Maybe, but you're forgetting the great opportunity for this guy, Who wouldn't be thrilled and want it!! He can go as far as he wants.
Hildebeast had double hip surgery during the COVID non-season in Sweden, which is why he was passed over on the draft and dropped so badly. Goalies and hip surgery do not usually do well in the same sentence. Another Woll coming up.
Hildeby is going to be a great goalie. But we all know the net belongs to Woll as soon as he's healthy…. I don't know if anyone here is old enough to remember a couple of Maple Leaf goaltending experiments, but I do. Bester and Reese and Rhodes and Potvin. Every one of those guys were good goalies and could have been great. But giving the net to two young goalies doesn't work. Ever.
