The Nylander situation is ridiculas, he's fine player but the best comparison in Pasta (same age, same role and comparable skills), he has more goals, more over point per game seasons, more point per game in playoffs and arguably doesn't have the same level of support to Nylander. Just for that Willi should be somewhere in the range of 10-10,5M or Pasta took less :D.

Bieksa was right on the money about Cousins. And Ron MacLean letting him loose to talk about it because he knew that PX was the only one on that paddle who really could speak to it with authority. And of course Kelly Hrudy could’ve as well.
Jennifer Botteril was great on the panel a few games ago, calling out the blood for blood rules.
Cousins really should be sent a message by the league. But the NHL wants to succeed in Florida so badly they turn a blind eye. And they love Paul Maurice. So as you say, the Panthers literally get away with murder. Bennett, Gudas, Cousins… just despicable players.

If that ends up being the deal for nylander I think its fine on it's own. He's one of the better players in the league and will be paid as such. But as most will mention, the cap situation pretty much forces one of the core players to be traded if they want to build a team around them
I like Nick. He's straight to the point & has good insight where the Leafs are concerned, as well. Willy is on a mission this year. Paying him for what he deserves is nice, but it's the recognition as an elite player is what I think he's after. We know how skilled he is, but with Matthews, Marner & Tavares making more money, he probably feels he's overshadowed & not given the recognition he rightly deserves

If Nylander signs for 8 years at $11.5 per season, COULD the Leafs front end load his contract again for 25 percent his first year and then pay out as much as they possibly can as a signing bonus for July 1st? His first year would be $14.375M, Leafs pay him a $13M bonus on July 1st and trade him to, oh I dont know, lets say San Jose(who would essentially be turning Karlsson into Nylander) on July 2nd. In exchange you ask? Vlasic with ~25 percent retained, Eklund, Addison, San Jose's 2025 first and fourth. Sharks get Nylander for 8 years at the cost to them of $79M. Lots of trade history between the two teams

Its also possible that they expect the cap to raise by more than enough that they can pay nylander this much and not worry. They likely know more than the rest of us how much the cap is going to rise this next season.

Have to say the Sharks have the worst statistician of any sports team on earth. Toronto had seven shots on goal thar were not counted and San Jose had one goal post and three shots wide were counted as shots. 🤣
Interestingly Nylander wasn't credited for a shot on goal on either of his goals. Guess he truly deserves that raise.

People act like this is a conspiracy theory but it's because Kadri was on a Canadian team and Cousins is on an American team. When Bettman took over his primary goal was growing hockey in the US. Before his take over Canadian teams won nearly 70% of all the Stanley Cups. If you go to the decade before Bettman took over 1983-1993 Canadian teams won 80% of those cups. After Bettman took over in 93 no Canadian team has won the cup (in 30 years).

If the League (TDPS) would do its damn job and actually discipline these shmucks maybe there'd be a little less cheap shots. And I agree get rid of the instigator. The Tkachuks and the Bennett s of the world would at least think twice if they knew a 6'5 240 enforcer were to hand out some justice without fear out getting kicked out and hurting their team.

I have said it for more than a decade now, there is a difference between how a game is called from an American team and a Canadian team. Canadian teams will always have their fanbase no matter what. US teams need to be successful to create revenue and TV ratings.

Lots of leafs fans are dumb. Trade Nylander? For what? What team is sitting out there willing to give us a top four defender plus assets? Signing him is the only right answer otherwise you lose this player and this team takes a big step back. Also if that’s better in your mind because you love cap space, what solution do you have for the 11 million in savings? I haven’t read one that appears better than keeeping him and until I do, signing him makes the most sense even if the number seems high

So the Leafs currently (underline currently) spend close to 50% of their Cap on 1/6 of their team roaster. In the Cap era, name a Stanely Cup finalist (not winner, let's lower the bar here) with the same team Cap structure? Bottom line, currently the Leafs just can't afford Nylander and expect to win the Stanely Cup. It's just not good business sense, hence why no other cup contending team is structured this way. Just not practical.
