Can someone explain why NHL teams delay officially listing guys as LTIR?
I am not talking about guys where the return date cannot be known. I am talking about guys where it is 100% known that they will be out for months, but NHL teams still delay moving them to LTIR designation.
IOW, I am talking about Dougie Hamilton. Is there some cap rule benefit to waiting to list Hamilton on the LTIR?

I can only assume we are going to need to trade for a bottom pair defenseman with Siegs AND Dougie out long term.
