anyone know if this is trustworthy?

  2. Happy he’s back if it’s true.

Cannot believe we have him 8 years and still managed an 11M+ caphit. New management, same results.

  3. wontbeabl

He’s played 1 point per game season and 1 year of 40 goals. Wild

  4. Soggy_Specific4093

Are they just taking Friedman’s report and putting it in Swedish?

  5. millers-lens

This is just reporting what is already known/rumored , the club and player are close to finalizing a contract for 11.5m at 8 years, not that it is a done deal.

  6. Fuuzzie

Wasn’t the rumors 10 or 10.5 at the start of the season.

  7. Okay so the leafs forever okay with paying our guys insanely high salaries leaving us cap stricken. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad Willy is a leaf but as soon as these guys get eliminated again (hopefully not too early) everyone in this sub will be screaming to the heavens about how we overpaid all of our players and can’t get good depth and ultimately not be able to win a cup because of it.

Can’t keep doing this. If we are conceding this is Matthews/Nylanders team now, I understand but Jesus you rolling 4 11 million dollar players. We lucked into WOLL maybe being a gift as a controlled serviceable goalie, but what if he’s not? Where is this team going to be able to properly flesh out a roster. I love Willy. I can’t support the cap hit for him, Auston and Mitch. Hope I’m wrong.

  9. swoleder

Now Nylander can relax and coast again. Good for him

  10. diecorporations

My very least favorite part of sports. Salary talk.

  11. footwith4toes

Too high but I’ll let my uncle and father in law complain about that. 8 YEARS OF WILLY STYLES

  12. Flatoftheblade

I’m going to be downvoted for this, but I have a bad feeling that Nylander is going to become Toronto’s Huberdeau.

I absolutely hope that I’m proven to be a dead wrong imbecile.

  13. ElephantShell34

People overreact when splitting hairs on ~$1.5M for these long term deals. The Leafs have a lot of rich contracts on their books but at least they’re for GOOD players. I’d rather overpay an elite forward on an 8 year deal than give some mid role player a 6×6.5.

For what it’s worth I think Nylander’s game is going to age pretty well. His skating is elite to the point where it could regress once he hits his 30s and he’d still be able to get by. He doesn’t play a very physical game so doesn’t have as many hard miles on his body as a lot of guys, plus he has a pretty good history of not getting injured. To me he profiles as a guy who can still produce well into his 30s.

  14. CoolCan1855

    Thanks, I hate it

Having said that, fuck yeah Willy let’s goooo

  15. BornIn67

And what is Marner’s next contract going to look like if Nylander is getting more than Pastrnak?

  16. BigMick20

The question is, (taking off the blue and white goggles) would you trade $11.5 Willy for $11.25 Pastrnak tomorrow.

  17. DontToewsM3Bro

    Leafs are fucked if true

    Massive overpayment LMAO

First round exit again here we go boys

  18. Mattewsmustache34

Hope he keeps the way he’s playing up and this isn’t just a contract year 1 off.

  19. krazykanuck

I mean,, he’s got to move one of the core 4 now, mathematically, right?

  20. covlethespaceman

I love Willy but let’s put his on ice play to the side for a minute.
This is the second longest tenured leaf after Mo. The staff know him inside and out. Treliving obviously doesn’t, but you don’t think they talk to all staff all the time? They know will better than we could imagine.
He’s a rink rat. He’s there every day, and the last one off the ice consistently. This has been reported ever since he was a rookie. Always on the ice and always working. Last one ready for games and practice, but stays out longer than anyone, is there at every optional skate it seems like. The only player on the ice after David Ayres embarrassment, shooting ON DAVID AYRES?? IT WAS WILLY. And of course he was laughing and joking and congratulated him about the night before as well, because he is so damn good at compartmentalising and moving on.He doesn’t just get better every year because he gets older. This dude puts in the work.
Leafs have a lot of euros and a lot of younger kids coming up from Europe. Matthews, Marner, Tavares, Rielly can’t guide these kids through it like he can. And he has. Timmy, Sandin, Holmgren, Willy leads the half of the team that the other 4 don’t, in a way the other four can’t. I used to love watching the bench when Willy scored, because you could the friendships and work he has put in for the team in their reactions. He is a leader, he is not the traditional north American captain, body on the line, losing teeth and rousing speeches but that’s fine, we have others to fill that role in their own way. I don’t think this has been recognized enough through his career. A chill dude that shows kids the ropes to NA, NHL, and how to deal with the spotlight of Toronto.
Wily is PERFECT for Toronto. We all know that. He just doesn’t give a shit what anybody thinks says or does. He’s just going to play hockey.
You think the MLSE saw him fucking OWNING Sweden, how bright his star is over there and not see dollar signs??? He was amazing for the team and the league in everything he did, on ice included that trip. This kid is a superstar and is loved over there. You seriously think they won’t monetize that? Of course they will.
I am and always have been a Nylanderthal. His highlight reel goals are better than anyone’s on the team. When he is dominant he is just as dominant as Matthews, and personally I love his style of play.
So, would I like him signed for less? Of course that would help my team. But I fucking love Nylander and I hope this is an 8 year contract and I get to watch him in the blue and white for his entire career.

  21. JamesCurtis24

It’s unfortunate that the first guy we get to sign to 8 years is 28-years-old (when the deal kicks in). I actually wish this deal was for less term, assuming this is true.

I’m sorry, but given that Nylander was a 30G, 60P guy the first 6 years of his career, I’m just not buying he’s going to live up to this contract very far into his 30s. IMO, the odds are HIGHLY on the side that he’ll regress sooner than elite level talent would. I expect the last 3-4 years of this deal (if we’re lucky) to be pretty much where we’re at now with Tavares (difference is we figured this for JT, and he’s nearing the end of his deal). Meaning Nylander is going to be a solid player, no doubt, but not 11.5M after the 3rd or 4th year of this deal.

And I know most of you will say « Who cares! 8 YEARS OF WILLY! » And you’re not wrong, but we continue to pay support players like this 13.5+% of the cap, while every single other team in the league pays players like this closer to 11.5% of the cap (which makes more than a 1.5M AAV difference). This only happens in Toronto, and it’s the reason you lose players like Zach Hyman, need a goalie tandem that makes less than 5M combined, and a D core half filled with near league minimum guys.

The other problem is you now throw the idea out the window of resetting Marner, who should also only be making 11.5-11.9% of the cap, so he’s going to demand probably more. And then don’t expect Knies to do you any favors down the road, who is going to ask for the absolute highest pie in the sky number he can get.

They better hope that JT is ready to re-up for next to nothing and can be a 70 point player until his late 30s or something. They also better hope that Woll and Hildeby can be the tandem of the future on team controlled deals for next to nothing.

And another side note, before anybody screams « THE CAP IS GOING UP! » Guess what, the cap is ALWAYS going up. Yes, it flattened out during COVID, but every team that signed their players to these much more rational deals before and after COVID did so knowing that the cap would eventually start jumping back up. The Panthers didn’t sign Matthew Tkachuk going « gee, maybe the cap will go down 4M in a few years, so, better budget safely! » Everybody knows the rise is coming.

Furthermore, we better not hear a fucking peep of complaining from Nylander the next 8 years when he’s roasted for under-performing, after no doubt getting a full NMC and the maximum amount of his contract paid out in a signing bonus. Even furthering the amount of ridiculous bending over backwards this team does for its players, which the fans support by paying $300 for a ticket.

    End of rant.

  22. NODES2K

Nylander had a carrot dangling in front of him all season….now what for the next 8 years?

  23. StoneColdSteveAss316

I like him better than Marner so I’m happy Willy still stays in the blue and white.

  24. That’s my guy!!!! Happy for him! Favourite player on the team and he deserves every penny after the steal of a deal he was on.

  25. smittyleafs

I hate this part of being a hockey fan. It’s not about being excited we’ve locked up a talented player for 8 years. It’s about dreading how cash strapped we’re going to be, and how this will impact how much Marner wants. So none of us can just be happy, because half of hockey fandom is fucking worrying of the damned budget of the fricken team against the cap. I spend enough of my actual life worrying about budgets and finances and hate how much of my hockey fandom is doing the same damned thing.

  26. Hockyinc

What has this team won again?
Why are their players being paid like they are winners?

    Total joke.

  27. Turbo_911

Hopefully true if it’s a done deal. A lot of crying in here, but if he went to free agency, I think he’d get more imo.

  28. drizzt09

But it isn’t a done deal. It’s being worked on and been speculated. But it’s done. It’s not finalized. It’s not even confirmed that’s the ending details.
