The AAV seems top of the line.
Along with favorable payout of the money and a no movement clause, this seems like a great money contract and great structured contract (for the player).
I guess we won’t officially know until later but as a fan this does frustrate me to a degree. In all honesty, what other team was going to give him this kind of money? Same money from another team would need to be 13m+ (only 7 year contract) and then he’d be 35. Gaudreau got 9m.
The whole thing just irks me but it is what it is, happy he is staying, sad it is for 11.5m as I think that is a bit of an overpay but hey, the cap is going up so that solves all this! /s
Let me start by saying Nylander and Rielly are my favourite players, I’d rather have Nylander signed to this contract then not have him on my team, and I’ll block this contract from my memory and just celebrate his awesomeness by the next game. But……. how did the leafs manage to lose in almost each part of this contract (besides term). Like you’d think if you’re giving $11.5 million you wouldn’t have to give full NMC the length of the contract or you could give the full NMC and have a lower AAV. All in all I love the contract and love Nylander but I just don’t giving everything.

Just a quick note, this is not what the Dodgers did with Ohtani, as they instead deferred the payments. Functionally it is similar, as the actual salary for both of them is low compared to their AAV, however for Nylander is still getting his money throughout each year of the deal as a bonus, while Ohtani is getting his deferred money in the ten years following the expiration of his new deal. Thereby, the money in the signing bonus is more valuable to Nylander as he is getting it sooner than Ohtani, who is getting his money later, thereby reducing the value of that money. Needless to say, both of them have low salaries compared to the AAV, but the mechanics behind how it works are different for the deals.

You have a gross misunderstanding either of what the Dodgers did or what this tweet means. There is absolutely 0 comparison between those deals.
The Dodgers are paying Ohtani $2 million per year for the next 10 years then they are paying him $68 million per year for the 10 after that (years he will no longer be playing baseball). Nylander just gets most of his yearly salary on July 1st and then collects a smaller salary biweekly (I believe they are paid biweekly) during the season. For example if he made $11.5 million next year he might get $10 million paid out on July 1st, then during the season get paid $1.5 million spread out over however many pay periods there are during the season. Its actually the opposite of Ohtani because the idea is it gives Nylander more money up front he can invest and grow while Ohtani is actually losing millions by deferring those payments 10 years essentially in an interest free account that also loses value with inflation.
