The Leafs chose Tyler Biggs and Stuart Percy in 2011 over players like Phillip Danault, Rickard Rakell, Boone Jenner, John Gibson and Nikita Kucherov
A lot of drafting and the players’ results in the NHL is player development. You don’t just draft good 18 year old players, and then magically, they perform.
So this is a better nod to the Avalanche noticing players that would fit into their development programs and getting ROI of their draft capital.

There was an article I saw begging the Avalanche to not draft Makar because of him being in the league he played and how his numbers were inflated.
I wouldn’t say though that they missed. Unfortunately, we will never know who Patrick would have become in the NHL. Provorov is a solid top 4 and who knows what the first rounder they draft will be like.
My favourite one is Chris Neil before Datsyuk. Eat shit sens. lol

In 2015, the NJ Devils selected Pavel Zacha with the 6th pick overall. They could have gotten Mathew Barzal, Milo Rantanen, or Kyle Connor, but instead they selected someone who didn’t amount to much.
Ottawa Senators 2005. Took Brian Lee at 9th, Anze Kopitar went 11th.
Missed Filip Forsberg by one pick in 2012, ended up with Mikhail Grigorenko.

Flames traded up with the Devils to ensure they would get the best goalie in the draft, Trevor Kidd. Devils got the second best goalie that draft who went on to have a decent multi-team career, notably retiring as a Blues player.

Seriously though 17/18 is too young still a lot of growing to do.
Raise the draft age to 20 and give more late bloomers a chance to make it. Overall the quality will improve over the long run.

Wild took Filip Johansson at 24 in 2018. He never even got a sniff of the AHL. But looking down the list, I didn’t see a ton of NHL talent taken afterwards. May have been a down draft year.
Canucks fans saying Virtanen are nuts. That wasn’t even a reach. Choosing Joulevi over Tkachuk was franchise altering. Benning is possibly the worst GM in the history of the NHL.
