You don’t enjoy the money from the bonus you get by making the ASG?
You’d rather put out money for a weeklong family vacay in the middle of the working year …

I know mine isn’t a popular opinion, but I don’t get why it’s so difficult for those guys to go to the all-star game. You’re being recognized by the league and your peers for being a great player, you get to have fun doing a thing you only get to feel intense pressure doing, it’s something that goes beside your name in the history books and you get to include it in your next contract negotiation. Maybe that stuff doesn’t matter to the big marquee players of the sport who will get respect and their big contracts no matter what, but to lots of guys it does matter.
You will also only get to play hockey professionally for 10-15 years unless you’re a Jagr-esque freak whose body defies time. And for most guys, you’re not at this top level of playing in All-Star games for the entirety of your career. You’ll get maybe 1, maybe 5 or maybe even 10 invites in your entire career. When you retire you can go lay in a hammock on a beach for the next 40-50 years of your life. But the opportunity to play in an all-star game is only ever going to be a short one.
Some of these guys need to rediscover what they love about playing hockey.

I think a lot of it is these guys are professionals and that’s how we see them. These guys are also husbands and fathers who miss a lot of family moments because of their work.
This is one time where they actually have a number of days in a row to reconnect… even more so in a place where no one knows them.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
