> As much as it sucks watching this team right now I think the right move is to just weather the year and make some moves in the summer
I agree with this. It just feels like yet another lost season but just more unexpected and unwelcome than all the other lost seasons. Giving up noteworthy assets to save this season doesn’t feel prudent.
Yet the betting odds for the Devils to make the playoffs are around -120, and the books also give the Devils a better chance to make the playoffs than the Flyers.
If you really believe it’s 20% then I’d advise you drop a wad a cash on them missing as that still is marked at 100+.
The move is see where we are the deadline, but probably chill out. Sell a rental if it’s really looking bad, but if Jack’s healthy and we are in the hunt then you can’t really sell.
Wouldn’t mind a small buy, you still really want this team to make the playoffs for the experience alone.
I personally would like to sell someone like Toffoli and recoup some assets. Then go into the offseason with the goal to get a goalie and someone like Hanifin or Forsling.
Just stay the course and see what happens. Could get hot and make the playoffs. But otherwise this season is a write off, recoup in the summer and figure something out.
For what it’s worth, the Moneypuck odds suck. I’m not super bullish on our playoff chances, but I wouldn’t use that site to measure them.
I think the move is to see what happens when Hughes comes back and go from there.
Stay the course. Hope everyone gets healthy and we sneak in. Otherwise accept the fact it was a cursed year and pick up a few pieces and push next year.
Season is 50/50 anyways, however this was something like 82% just last week. Huge grain of salt etc etc.
Look for deals with term that make sense for the future. So much has gone wrong this year it’s not worth the trade currency to try and salvage it
I’d rather make a run for the playoffs than just barely missout and be stuck with a mid first round pick. Regardless we will need a goalie, so we either trade for one now, over the summer, or over pay a FA.
Based on Fitz’s track record I think he could pull off a trade that won’t screw us long term. But regardless, if we don’t do anything soon it won’t matter.
Also fire Lindy, sooner rather than later but would settle for after the season.
Firing the coach doesn’t fix the Ahl caliber D/goalies devils currently have. Making a trade for Sarros is the only play I’d support. Although it would be incredibly expensive, and doubtful Preds would move him.
Get healthy during the break, drink some gato, and go on a 12 game heater.
I don’t think any moves we make should be solely for the purposes of winning this year, but it doesn’t mean we need to do nothing. If they trade for a goalie for example, it should be for someone with term that they can keep beyond this season and if it also helps us make the playoffs this year it’s a bonus.
I don’t think Fitz is gonna get rinsed by anyone, he’s been very savvy with his transactions to this point. So if any player with term is available for the right price, we should just make the deal and whatever happens this year, so be it. But for rental-type players, I wouldn’t touch that unless we go on a good heater leading up to the deadline.
No move. Injuries and horrendous goaltending has made this season a write off. Move on to 2024/25 season and find a goaltender in the offseason if you really dont trust Schmid or Vanacek heading into next year, problem with that is last season they were top 10 goaltenders in the league, this season league worst so what are they?
No big trades unless it’s like askarov. Win 2 of our next 3 and I’m confident in making the playoffs. Lose all 3 and I’m confident in missing
I think with flyers losing hart that 3rd spot is up for grabs easily. And i think our team as is can get to overtake that 3rd spot when healthy. I dont mind making trades but id want building pieces for a long run which is filtz plan still
Agree with everything you said, don’t want them unloading good young pieces for some rental to make a push. We are too soft to make any sort of deep playoff run even if we sneak in. If we can get a goalie that’s worth it sure, but otherwise just let this be a growth year especially for Luke and Nemec then go after it in the offseason in terms of making moves.
There was a time where Edmonton had no chance. This team could easily win 10 in a row.
The move is that guy who posts the weekly pain meter is going to have to extend the scale a bit.
Can’t really take Moneypuck super seriously. But yeah, the chances of us making the playoffs are looking slimmer by the day. We’ll have a better idea where this team truly stands after the first week back from break, but I’m leaning toward punting this season in all honesty. Over the offseason we need a goalie, defensive depth, and a new center
Trade Toffoli and don’t give up assets. This season is a wash
Need a goalie. Desperately
They had us at like 90% to start the year. That’s why they play the games. Team needs to get healthy for a stretch and stay healthy
Cry
I don’t think any moves should be made, that’s what messed this team up by changing so much from last season..
The only downvotes will rightfully come from using Moneypuck as a source. But throwing that graphic right out the window, our playoff potential comes down to two realistic possibilities:
1) Jack returns on the 7th and we win 3 or 4 in a row, or damn close, and we have a strong chance of making the playoffs (to what end I am very very dubious but you prob want to support Jack given how competitive he is).
2) He doesn’t and the season is effectively over. Call up all the few remaining rookies and start selling off pieces.
It’s really not that complicated. No self-appointed experts are necessary at this point in the season.
Get an actual coach and try to salvage what’s left. Let the players get used to another coaches system now.
The best deadline acquisitions for the Devils will be guys getting healthy.
The second best deadline acquisition will be Vitek finding some form.
If a team wants to cough up a 1st for Toffoli, take it and re-sign him on July 1.
Tank.
We went from cup contenders to 21% chance of just making the playoffs.
I hate being a Devils and Jets fan. More disappointment than the women I sleep with get.
Personally I’d put us around 40% right now. Best chance will probably be the third metro spot, I could see Philly start to fall a bit as they didn’t have a great January either. But then you have Pittsburgh trying to make that last push with their older core.
I said it in another thread, but one thing I think we have going for us is that (when healthy) I think this team does well when faced with adversity. I did not think we would come back to beat the Rangers after going down 2-0 in that series last year but they found a way. I could see the team tightening up and playing better as we get down to the final stretch. You gotta believe!
i’m not on team punt, it’s most definitely salvageable and it wouldn’t be for nothing. they have 1 less win than 3rd in the metro with 3 games in hand.. they’re already set to be a contender for the rest of the decade, the assets (not casey, grits..) are expendable. get a halfway decent goalie and 3C while they recharge during the break and they can get hot and everyone’s healed for playoffs on top of a good little tampa esque circumvention and they’re set up nicely for a cup run
It’s embarrassing how many fans are accepting that it’s okay that the team is having a significant setback. This was supposed to be a season where the Devils were competing for a Stanley Cup, and now they aren’t going to make the playoffs.
Everyone keeps saying get healthy, enjoy the break, etc. Yet, the same was said by fans over the Christmas break, too, and here we are.
We’ve been through 10+ years of bad hockey, and now a team with young franchise talent is wasting a season coming off 107 points, and we’re saying, “We’ll get them next season.”
What happened to this fanbase? We went from demanding the playoffs every season at The Meadowlands to becoming the softest fanbase in the NJ/NY market.
We don’t complain about losing games and make excuses for performance but have people yearning for Rock and Roll Part 2 to be the goal song again.
We should accept nothing less than a Conference Finals appearance with this team, even with the injuries. It’s sad what this subreddit has become.
