  1. It was a very sentimental and emotional game for me last night. I had a dear college friend of mine who I lost last March. I knew him for eight years, but it seemed like I knew him forever.

He got into hockey in 2014. He became a Leafs fan because they were the top rival of the team with the most titles in the NHL (Montréal). Even in the midst of the infamous Randy Carlyle era, he chose to root for them. His support for them never wavered in the hardest of times. He made sure to watch every LFR. Steve was a guy he could sympathize with about the insanity of being a fan of this team (as many of you can attest to).

He also had an amazing Leafs jersey collection. Matthews, Kadri, heck even one with his own name and number on it. I had my fandom of the Leafs as a way of bonding with him and I enjoyed the young core they were building at the time. I got a William Nylander jersey on Christmas 2016. We had many days in college where we'd twin in them – I'd wear Nylander, he'd wear Matthews.. We got a picture together in them which stands to be our favorite picture together. At his funeral, the dress code was sports jerseys. Once I found that out, I knew which one I was gonna wear. There was no other choice. That's what he would have wanted.

There's no doubt if he were still around, we would have had a great time reacting to the game and talking about it. With a game as good as last night's was, it would have been an amazing experience. He and I bonded over so many things and had numerous conversations about everything for hours. Hockey was just one of the many ways we came together.

Every time the Stars and Leafs play I get emotional because I recall all the good times we had watching hockey, especially when these two teams face off against each other. I remember he took much joy in 2015-16 when the Peter Horacek Leafs swept the season series against the eventual Central Division winning Stars. Then the next year in Matthews rookie season they laid an egg against the terrible Stars in Dallas. I remember repeatedly saying the Leafs were gonna walk all over them. He was so mad at me 😂

It was so fitting that Matthews and Nylander both scored last night. Granted it's more likely to happen than not, but it was still sweet to see.

In honor of him, I'm wearing my Nylander jersey today. I know that's what we would have done today.

I love and miss him everyday. RIP Garrett, my friend. Until we meet again.

  2. What I want to know is, why does Dallas love playing their backup against us? Oettinger has an 0-2 record against the Leafs in his 4+year career. Wedgewood has an 0-4 record in what is now about 2 years with the Stars.

  3. Good for Willy, but what about that attempt at the empty net that would have sealed the win instead of making it another nail biter? All he had to do was take a few more strides, maybe take it into the face of that Dallas player. Instead, it's a lazy, safe shot from the wrong side of the red line, that misses.

  4. As a flames fan I don’t want to deal to the leafs, I feel like any trade we would make would be unbalanced and eventually end up with us losing the trade at least imo, not to mention in our little retool we’re doing right we can’t make any trades for a lot of draft picks due to torontos draft capital being small

  5. Funny side story:
I went scrolling through my YouTube feed last night trying to find the leafs game highlights (don't generally getnto watch the games) and the first thing I scrolled past related to the game was an image of Willy sitting shirtless smiling in a post-game interview… I then knew they won😂

  6. I’ve been hoping for a package including Kadri (if Calgary can take on some salary)He’s a gritty centre who’s won a cup and would provide depth in the playoffs. Can fill in 2nd line centre to move Tavares over next year.

  7. I just wanted to toot the horn of Simone Benoit, who has been really earning my respect on this team. He took a run at Marchment likely as a payback for the McCabe hit. It was a well timed hit, and what I liked about it was that, he didn’t have to take a penalty to get some retribution. Just a clean, well timed, bad intentioned hit. Keep er goin Simone!!!

  8. This was a lucky win. Another game of 1 and 3/4 periods of lazy ass lackadaisical hockey.

Can fellow Leaf fans stop with this team winning a cup. Not happening.

Players that have won a cup or gone deep and know what it takes like O Rielly, flee this team faster then they come here. They see 1st hand how horrible this team is and how piss poor there culture is.

If the last 8 years of the same song and dance havent clued you in yet.

  9. Nylander stays cool for these regular season goals. That makes for good karma in so many ways. Not like Mr showboat. That whole rub it in your face thing just makes you look like a ding dong later when you loose. That and the other teams energy goes up when you do that too. Bertuzzi? I don't know man. Pick it up bud your better then that.

  10. Steve. Long time fan. I love your commitment to your reviews but I don’t think it’s healthy. Mostly for you as the creator, but all of us that hang our hats on the leafs. We need to stop pretending the core gives a #*%% about us. It’s a job. Would like you’re added opinion to this 🙂
