I know the leafs need help on the back end, and I’d even by down with them spending considerable assets to get that help, but Risto isn’t that guy, and his deal is too rich. I don’t even hate the player as much as many do, I just can’t imagine a situation where he comes in and is a good fit and succeeds in the role.
I’m really hoping this is just another case of an agent using the leafs to drum up talk about their player, because it just doesn’t make sense to me to actually make a deal.

I think people are going off of Risto’s reputation in Buffalo. He’s actually been solid in Philly, he’s not worth 5.1m, but I would hate him at like 3.75m.
if it’s 50% retained and they send US a 1st then sure. Risto is such a negative asset, even at 2.5 mill, he’s an albatross.
Plus our bottom pair is basically set with Benoit/McCabe, we need an upgrade on McCabe to play the 4 full time, or go for a home run with a Top 2 to replace that Muzzin sized hole that we’ve been trying to fill for the last half decade.
I’m sure we *could* find a spot for him as the 7th D, but unless the return is too good to be true, there’s no reason for us to take on his contract, just to bury him.
I would only consider this if there is retention for both him and Laughton.
The trade is going to be a first and probably Liljegren.
Awful cap hit and term, but he COULD carve out a role here. He has an enviable skating and puck skills combo, while Keefe’s system can simplify the game for him, masking his biggest weakness. The market adores guys that hit, which should keep the boo birds off his back for a bit. Seems like a potential buy low option, seeing as he effectively started the season in late November.
But do the Leafs need to chance it when they’re battling for a playoff spot? Who would he replace/improve upon? Most importantly: can they afford a risky move at $5.1 million for 3 more years? It’s stupid.
