I don’t know enough about defensive systems to comment intelligently on this but I’ve been happy with the defense recently so keep doing this I guess!
This should help some of our rookie defensemen out a lot, as seen in the past couple games. I like the older system but think it definitely took more seasoned personnel to execute.
You mean our defenseman are playing better defense when you have them playing a more traditional system compared to an all out offense? What a shock.

Thanks so much for posting this! I kept hearing Bill, Dano and Bryce talking about about the modifications, but I missed it if they explained the details (and Bryce is usually awesome at that, so I’m assuming I just missed it)
I think the big takeaway here is the coaching staffs confidence in hughes game along the boards. His first few seasons he was abysmal along the boards. One of the worst in the league for board battles won %. If they now want him in the corner instead of the d man, i think that says alot about his development on the physicality side of the game.
Jack has been playing wing specifically so he doesn’t have to spend so much time down low covering on D. Otherwise this image is a good depiction of the new system.
A simple box and 1. Successful for years at every level
D1 and D2 swarming the puck is a terrible idea especially for young defensemen, glad we put an end to that as it will just cause confusion and blown assignments. I’d assume D2 guarding the front of the net and watching the backdoor pass to the man crashing the net is standard in most defensive zone coverages.
When I played competitively, we used a coverage similar to this that kept the wingers tighter to the defensemen at the point. Center was the support/fill in guy whenever someone had to move outside their position in the box.

I always preferred having 1 d man stay home because defenseman are usually better equipped to clear out the net front and tie up sticks.
The Twitter post says from *before* the all star break, so this is not current as the current system was first implemented in the game vs carolina. Crucially, Jack has played wing instead of center since coming back because the current iteration of the system is even more demanding on the center and they are trying to ease him back.
