» #Feuilles

Noted delight to have in class Simon Benoit

Fr though, I already got the sense that he was a good locker room presence, and fought his ass off on the ice, played with grit and heart, but then I listened to this podcast episode where he got interviewed and like, he’s fucking worked his ass off.

Now, obviously, “NHL player worked hard to get where they are” is such a nothingburger of a statement, but he really seems to take every opportunity and run all the way to the bank with it. Every time he’s given a chance to prove his worth, he does so in spades.

I fucking hope to god his effort is rewarded with an extension. We want him here, he wants to be here, make it fucking happen Treliving. He’s very arguably the best move that Treliving made.

This is what we thought we had in Holl but clearly not.

  3. riko77can

Extend the man. Would hate to see him walk.

They definitely need to re-sign Benoit. He’s been a very pleasant surprise. What a completely unforced error by the Ducks not to qualify him. Especially when they could have just kept him instead of trading a 4th for 29 year old Ilya Lyubushkin.

So you’re saying Benoit is the Kawhi of hockey?

  6. JamesCurtis24

Can’t wait for a team to offer him 5x5M because of the Toronto effect.

  7. PhilsbandyDoughboy

    Yeah I’m thinking 7 years x $14 million

Deadass tho, actually resign this man

  8. TheNickelGuy

Benny is a diamond in the rough. Guys so unique and tries SO hard. I love that he’s a part of this team

  9. CanadianCheeseMan

Edmonton already drawing up the 5×5

  10. Silent-Obligation-49

All I know is they better bring this guy back. This is exactly tge type of d man the Leafs have been missing.

Brad coming in hot with the most unexpected rockstar signings from the offseason. Meanwhile Bertuzzi has been a turd burger. Praying he puts it together soon

Sorry, I know this isn’t a Wendy’s. But I felt like writing about Simon Benoit bc my GF broke up with me on Valentine Day and you love who you love, right?

Our boy looks like the fuckin’ Riddler in this pic, but he’s far from an e. nigma. Dude is exactly what this team and this fanbase have been clamouring for for years. He has the hunger that fans crave. Leafs Nation respects nothing more than a blue collar player who busts his ass, defends his teammates, throws hands, has the dirtiest of stashes, and never clocks out until the final whistle. That’s why we believe in Simon Benoit.

I always roll my eyes whenever people claim « this guy has more heart than this guy » or « this player doesn’t care », because there’s almost always a heavy dose of bias and artificial narratives with statements like that (also, it’s super silly). But one thing you can’t claim is that there’s another guy on this roster that battles *more* than Simon Benoit. He shows up to fill his role just as well as anyone else does theirs. Even if super sexy Simon has a poor night, at the end of any game, you’ll never say to yourself or your drunk uncle, « You know, I wish Simon Benoit played harder. » That’s one thing you can’t take away from him – dude plays for keeps.

The Benny-McCabe duo have given the Buds’ blueline an identity that a d-pairing hasn’t had in recent memory. They’re not perfect, but they’re pros. A thought is who you hope to be, an action’s who you are. They don’t just look the part, or talk the part in the media, they act the part, too. That’s what defines them. And for other depth pieces who cling to, or are afforded, the excuse of « saving their games for the playoffs », this pair continually chooses to leave their bubblegum at home and kick ass when it’s still snowing outside.

« Madness, as you know, is a lot like gravity. All it takes is a little push. » The Leafs as a group feel like they need a ~~push~~ cannonball sometimes to force them to step up and flip that switch we all wished was automatic. But as we’ve seen in flashes and heard from both coaches and star players, what guys like Benoit and McCabe do on a nightly basis don’t go unnoticed. The boys have had 15 total fights this season and one of Simon Benoit or Jake McCabe have been involved in 6 of the last 9. They also lead the team in hits. Their play may not always register on the Richter scale in the bigger picture of generating clicks or being the sexiest of podcast topics, but their impact is certainly felt with fans and teammates alike; they *do* move the needle. You only hope their play is more infectious come April.

The Leafs had another fan favourite don the #2 last spring and he was excellent. But with Benoit’s age, contract situation (RFA) and, most importantly, his play, I hope he’s associated with this number for the foreseeable future. They say you can’t fall in love with depth guys, but Cupid can be a motherfucker sometimes. That arrow hit me hard. At the beginning of the year, if you would’ve told me that Simon Benoit would be a fan favourite on the blueline or that I’d know how to spell ‘Ridly Greig’ without Googling it, I would’ve said you’re crazy. But I guess people need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy. Say what you want about the indifference that’s been the Leafs season thus far, one thing you can’t say is that Simon Benoit has been boring. Dude’s a gem, far from a riddle and, most importantly, Simon Benoit is a Toronto Maple Leaf.

Benoit is our new Holl (but we actually like him (for now))

  14. wholesomesammich

He probably grew up hating the Leafs

Why wouldn’t Treliving extend the guy? Fans/coaches/team mates love him and he will be cheap. It was Treliving who brought him here so its HIS guy. He is a typical Tre Dman, big gritty and defensive.

  17. Northern49th

I’m not a jersey guy. But I have always said if I buy a jersey it would be 44. Now I’m thinking I would want a Benoit jersey. Love this guy!!!!

  18. Bobbyoot47

Benoit and Jones are two of the most underrated signings we’ve seen around here in years.

  19. Shoelesshobos

I remember when he got signed people were dogging the signing because he had horrid numbers with the Ducks but I really felt like it was a good low cost gamble because he was cheap and really you can’t judge a player on that ducks team they were just a horrible team to begin with hell they made Lindholm look poor.

I’m not saying Benoit is lindholm but just because he has dog water numbers on a bad team does not mean he can’t be a serviceable player.
