It was a bad loss. But it was a different loss than the ones that pissed me off in the first half of the season.
We were getting outhustled and outplayed in those games. It was really tough to watch.
The mistakes today made me roll my eyes and shake my head, but I wasn’t disappointed in the same way with the overall effort.
I didn’t see the third, so I maybe missed us rolling over a bit. But I was enjoying rooting for the team the first two periods.
My point being that, overall, we do seem to be playing better. I think a lot of it is UPL, Cozens, Greenway, and Jokiharu improving a lot in the past 10-20 games
Also, Benson is awesome
If you view this year as a development year then you’re probably encouraged by their improvement in a number of areas. The areas of improvement + goal scoring touch returning + a continual rounding out of their game and you can see a scenario in which they take off like rocket fuel next season. If you view this year as one in which they were supposed to compete for the playoffs then you’re going to be really frustrated as they’ve taken a huge step back.
Posted this in another thread but I agree with Chad’s take on this. Fire Granato or not, I don’t care at this point, but this team isn’t far away. If the powerplay has been even average we aren’t having this convo (not that that isn’t his fault)
[Defense has been better, they’re still top 10 in the league in scoring at 5v5, shot quality has gotten better (until Power got hurt), and they’ve had stupid injury luck. I know nobody wants to hear it and I get but I do. It’s reality though.](https://x.com/cmdedominicis/status/1759697265235558792?s=46&t=A9g-Am0a5jCjDIuzDBhpHw)
And also like this point
[Well flip it. Tuch, Skinner, Tage, and Cozens all having down production years. Quinn has played 1/4 of the games. Annnnnnd they’re still top 10 in 5v5 scoring.](https://x.com/cmdedominicis/status/1759720317927178463?s=46&t=A9g-Am0a5jCjDIuzDBhpHw)
All that said, this team clearly has a mental issue and if Granato can’t fix that then we need to find someone that will.
I am not in the playoffs or bust camp, but this year has been hard to watch compared to the last two. They just always seem to be fighting their game and the simple stuff is a struggle for them. I don’t have the exact numbers but at least 20 of their losses are because they go down 2-0 10 minutes into the game OR they outplay the other team and then just gift high danger scoring chances to the other team and they score on most of them. The losses are just so painful to watch when it’s almost always self inflicted issues.
I think firing Granato at this point is a stupid stupid idea. And no matter where I say it I end up just muting the conversation. This team couldn’t win by gunning it so defense was needed. Yeah, it’s frustrating to watch. But so will hiring another coach and once again having them learn a new system. It’s just mind numbingly dumb to start over again.
Only fucking team who needs 10 years to rebuild and yet still No progress
He’s out of answers. And I get it. I genuinely believe that this dude doesn’t know why it’s not working. He seems unable to reach the conclusion that one of the keys to success in this league is being well rounded enough to mix up the play style. Playing the same book every night does not work. Plan A isn’t working against MOST of the teams in this league. So do we just keep going with Plan A and hope that eventually the kids get so great that it will work on most teams? Or do we say ok, teams are reading our plays, they’re anticipating our passes, they know where our shots are gonna be from. Let’s try to change those things up a little and see if that makes us a little harder to play against.
And the worst part is it’s not even 100% his fault. He got a bunch of younglings who all had one or two good moves that the league hadn’t seen yet and they used them to kick ass for a season. Then the tape was out. Now you’ve got a bunch of one trick ponies that have to truly learn to play in the NHL and they’re learning from a bunch of guys with little to no NHL coaching experience. If they get traded they’ll get real coaches/trainers and will be beauties.
As it happens EVERY ERA ON THIS TEAM
Keep hoping boys, all we got.
