“In the past four months, there were two things,” Brisson said. “*All along Petey wanted to be a Canuck* and two, in talking to Jimmy and Patrik they really wanted to have an idea of what their cap was going to look like,” he said.

  2. It’s really obvious that this organization is just on a different level now. Very inspiring to see, not just for the next couple of years but in general for the franchise. Good stuff.

Seems like 5 x $11m was also on the table.

Seems to me he took a bit of a discount by maybe a million. Hopefully myers and some others who have made big money do the same.

Was nice to see Petey smiling, it’s nice to see the guys enjoy themselves and be happy a little bit ya know, this team is very business first, but I think the guys forget to enjoy the process, it’s important to have fun as well

This is interesting as it undercuts this narrative that’s cropped up that it was a Carolina trade call that spurred this into place. I find it interesting nobody asked about that at the presser.

Sooo all the talk in the media last few weeks was a bunch of hot air?

    I’m shook

I’m very happy that we have a star that wants to stay with us. Things could’ve very easily been like Calgary, where their two stars opted to leave, but we are lucky that Pettersson chose to stay with us and committed to this team and city long-term.

That’s an interesting read. Also, a weight off of Pettersson’s back. This should light a fire to get back to strong hockey and roll into the post season with some momentum.

There is likely a bit of narrative control going on here. I don’t believe that the last week of Feb was targeted at the all star break. That doesn’t make sense. I believe that the noise recently is what got things going again.

Despite the criticisms of Peteys play lately, dude is absolutely the type of player you want to keep around long term.

Does he need a bit of work in some areas, absolutely. Do I believe he is the type of person to learn and develop the things he needs to become the best version of himself in the league, also absolutely.

I have faith that this man will put in every ounce of effort to take the team to the Stanley Cup, and it won’t be for lack of effort if the team does not succeed.

  12. If this series of events was intentional (it probably wasn’t entirely), this was a brilliant example of management and Petey’s agent controlling the sentiment around this contract and setting everyone up to look good moving forward.

+ Float numbers as high as $12.5+m AAV and terms as short as 4 years, but sign at $11.6 x 8. Petey looks like he’s not maximizing $ and truly wants to win, leaving money on the table, and it quiets some of the would-be criticism that would come from looking like he absolutely maxed out (despite him not playing his best lately). Management looks like good negotiators. Fans (rightfully) feel that we got a bit of a deal.

+ Leak some believable, but uninspiring potential trade names with Carolina that reinforce the notion that you can’t win a trade with Petey. Again, quiet some of the criticism of the deal by showing the how little you’d get if Petey didn’t sign and we traded him.

+ Plan for end of Feb timing of a deal all along, but through a series of leaks create some buzz that it was partly ‘the noise’ that led to this deal getting done early. Canucks media and fans feel like maybe they had some hand in influencing all of this. It also humanizes Petey and maybe makes people think twice about relentless criticism, showing that he hears the noise out there. Makes management seem like they masterfully got Petey to the table, and again makes Petey seem like he made a concession for the team’s benefit.

The fact that they did this all in such a way that generally feels like a win, and draws rave reviews during a losing streak and a mini-personal slump was pretty brilliant.

Honestly I think this deal is a win for reasons beyond messaging — management and Petey and his agent deserve a lot of credit for this outcome — but all the anchoring and framing, whether intentional or not, has shown most reasonable, rational fans how much of a win this is. Messaged improperly, the same contract might’ve led to much worse criticism and negative noise in this market.

I’m happy that the vibes generally seem to be high today and we can continue to look forward to the team finding its groove and chasing success this year!

As a long time NFL 49ers fan as well I think this is the first time in over a decade I’ve felt this team is being run in the upper echelon and by smart and competent people. And what’s up top makes all the difference between franchises that win and ones that don’t. Great players will always come and go and the draft ensures even terribly run teams will end up with superstars, but it takes a management team to bring it all together.

I think we all owe the Aquilinis an apology. It took them a while, but we finally have a management group we can trust.

  15. Luxferrae

I feel like Allvin used the fact he was building a strong contender and turned around and demanded a lower contract price if Petey wanted to stay (this the Carolina bit earlier in the week)

« Sign now or we trade you, and nope we won’t do 12M »

  16. Vageenis

Maybe JR will be making a Carolina trade at the deadline now, any potential winger options we could make work with petey that’s attainable cap-wise?

  17. Complex-Ad-5907

What is the difference between salary, signing bonus and actual cap hit.

    “Do you like Hurricane season?”

    “No.”

    “Sign here please.”

  19. lightningmcmemex

Honestly, I trusted this management group to be able to handle either a signing or trade situation. I believe they would’ve and the most out of getting assets back. I really appreciate their aggressiveness as well.
