“They ask for my input, occasionally. But it’s not just the deadline. We’re talking all the time. What are some of the things we need and where we’re lacking? That’s an ongoing process starting in the offseason. How our team is shaping up and what we’re thinking of the guys we’re playing right now. … It’s all those little scenarios that we talk about trying to refine our group for the playoffs.”

**WHAT I’M THINKING**
— The Avs should remain aggressive before the deadline to establish quality center depth. Trading Kurtis MacDermid last week to the Devils cleared a roster spot and about $1 million in cap space; leaving the Avs without about $2.2 million available (per [](http://capfriendly.com/)). The Avs need to address this stuff long term. Develop some talent instead of rental pieces. It’s the same shit the last couple of seasons. The core still has a few seasons before the window closes.

Personally, I would want to see a full season of backup duty from Justus before I could trust him going into the playoffs. I like what I’ve seen so far from him, but he’s still really young—give him a little more time.

I really hope we’ve hit an inflection point in his development, but I’m not yet confident after one great game against the Bedards. Hopefully he’s in tonight and it goes well again!
I don’t envy this front office right now. 2C is a gap, but there’s a case the team is scoring well enough without a true 2C and the market is crazy tight; the team has a question mark at backup goalie and our starter is overworked and erratic (Tuesday was incredible; Saturday was not great, though he wasn’t the main issue); and the defense is inexplicably and significantly underperforming, but it seems more like a scheme issue than a talent issue? It’s so tough to figure out what they’ll do.
