@Devils du New Jersey

Allen ira au NJ pour un 3e conditionnel (les matchs joués pourraient en faire une seconde)

Ooof. That’s too much. Not going to cry bloody murder like the rest of the people here but that’s a lot for what is essentially a test run on a veteran goaltender who has struggled this season behind a poor team

edit: Oh man he has another year on his contract. Kind of baffling but since it’s retained I’m assuming he’d ideally slot in as a back up once VV gets bought out and we bring in some real talent for a starter

  4. mxskater

I’d rather stick with daws and Vanicek

  5. IIlIlIIllIlllIIllllI

Really dealt Sharangovich for Jake Allen incredible fail by Fitz there

  6. Blind_surgeon89

Gotta catch em all with the sub .900 goalies I guess

  7. Batfleck666

Somebody make a « Flex Seal » meme please

  8. nostradamefrus

If the wildcard race is truly over – which I believe, but I still have a shred of hope – then what the fuck is this? It’s a sidegrade at best

    I’m getting disgruntled

  9. isuzuki51

I would’ve prefered we sat out this trade deadline if these were the moves being made.

  10. Schnevets

Retained? Please somebody tell me Montreal is retaining…

  11. nachos_16

Gross we Already have 3 Jake Allen’s

  12. MangoJuice82

At least I got baseball season coming, *remembers she’s a Yankee fan*, Oh, right.

  13. nostradamefrus

    Everyone: « We need a goalie »

Fitz: « Say no more »

  14. pooontangclan3

Well, not ideal. But not the end of the world. Looking at Emily kaplans tweet (seems she broke this news first), she was replying to herself from a previous tweet which makes this sounds more promising. Doesn’t look like the plan is to roll with Jake Allen as our starter for next year:

I’m dreaming this all today right? This isn’t real

  16. theketchupthief

Just generationally bad asset management. Dave Gettleman-esque.

  17. pro_omnibus

He’s got a full year left on his contract and Habs are retaining 50% both this year *and* next.

This is just a whatever move to get a backup for next year. Even in a terrible season he has better stats than VV so it could always be worse.

  18. zeldanerd12

Is Fitzgerald smoking crack? Now they have 4 goalies who suck.

  19. SerPownce

Would’ve preferred zero moves today. Just fade me fam this season has been a capital L

  20. Kornja81

He basically got a 2nd for Toffoli then….. this isn’t looking good at all.

  21. OgreUAsshole

Devils trying the “what if we had four backup goalies and no starters” strategy

  22. eburton555

Fitz really pissinn me off this week

  23. Well we better make sure he doesn’t hit the amount of games played to turn this into a 2nd…

  24. dog_fantastic

I wonder what the overlap is of people bitching about this trade and those who cried « trade for any goalie for whatever it takes »

  25. ghostofkozi

As much as I trust Fitz, this is just indefensible. Allen doesn’t improve team goaltending, they already have Vitek next season at $3.4 and Daws and Schmid are without contracts. It’s painting the team into a bit of a corner where you hope the plan is to tank and trade one of Allen or Vanacek in the offseason as well as picks for Markstrom/Saros

  26. Kornja81

If he plays 40 games between now AND next year it’ll be a 2nd….. wtf dude. Fitz gotta go.

Edit: it’s now finally exclusive to 24-25 season. Still… a 3rd which could possibly turn into a 2nd is a terrible trade for Allen

  27. MickFleetwood

Yeah, the people letting us know the Toffoli deal was fair value and made sense are going to have trouble with this one. Simply does not make sense to make this deal in a lost season for up to a second rounder.

  28. matty-ice27

Clearly a stop gap to try and find a way to not completely destroy the confidence/development of Daws and Schmid. If there’s a move for Saros/Ullmark/Other in the offseason and Allen is the backup it’s a completely fine trade. Let’s the kids grow a little more, maybe be more confident the weight of the team isn’t on their backs and Allen might not even hit the 40 mark.

    Breathe everyone

  29. srp9691

This really isn’t as bad as it appears. Allen will help stabalize the position. Having 2 rookies as the tandem is a problem. He can go into next year with a low cap hit as a back up. If he provides average/slightly below average goaltending it is SO much better than we have gotten.

  30. AGOEsLois

Would’ve been way funnier to claim Raanta from waivers and leave the Canes without their goalie depth tbh

  31. NJDFansince82

I think the plan is to play 4 below average goalies in net at the same time.

  32. ExperienceEvery1866

Schmid has been mid, VV probably dead at this point, and Daws has been getting overplayed after recent hip surgery. This is clearly a stop gap before Fitz goes after what he really wants in a starter. I see this as a temporary compromise so the team doesn’t get decimated every game that Daws doesn’t start, and so the « fans » aren’t screaming bloody murder every game. Unlikely we make it to the playoffs, we have to come to terms with this

  33. falaris

If you are upset by this deal, then it is likely because you don’t understand that this trade is not Fitz’s attempt to solve the goaltending going forward.

This is so that our young guys who deserve to still be in the minors stop having their confidence getting wrecked for the rest of this year.

As for next year: Fitz would not be so stupid to think his job isn’t on the line if he doesn’t acquire a league-average-or-better goaltender this offseason after this past year, even if he gets bent over on the deal. Allen is most likely our backup next season.

Given that Montreal retained 50%, that gives us flexibility to buy-out Vanacek if he isn’t packaged as part of a trade. When considering all the other factors, Fitz made as decent of a move as could be expected for a trade-deadline deal.

Who knows who the #1 ultimately winds up being, but Jake Allen backing up *any* decent goaltender next year will make me feel better than Daws or Schmid after how this year has gone.

If Fitz doesn’t acquire a #1 before next season starts, then I’ll call for him to be fired. Until then, this is a decent move for the rest of this season & next season.

  34. jerrosen14

This is not a ‘panic move’ lmao. He’s protecting Daws/Schmid for the rest of the season. Not letting their confidence get crushed. And also to help preserve their waiver status. Allen is fine half retained as a veteran backup next season. I imagine they do not let him his the 40 game mark so it’ll likely just be a third.

The plan very clearly is still to bring in Markstrom/Ullmark/Saros as a true #1 in the off-season. Now if a true #1 doesn’t happen, then yea all the criticism is warranted. But I can’t see that happening.

Apparently Allen is a very good mentor for young goalies as well.

As for the toffoli trade, it is what it is. You have to believe Fitz took the best offer available. All the sharangovich hindsight stuff is BS. When the trade was made, it was very clearly the right move. It’s been a season from hell that has led us to this point but you can’t claim it was a bad trade initially now that we’ve seen the season play out. Sharangovich also was never going to get the opportunity here that he is getting in Calgary. He’s a streaky goal scorer

  35. AISwearengen

The condition is actually 40 games next year. This is a very good trade with 50% retention. He’s a cheaper and better option as the backup than Vitek next season. Who cares about a 3rd round pick? A decent goalie would’ve had us in the playoff hunt this year.

  36. Flyingbk

Those of you comparing save percentages as if those raw numbers even come close to telling the full story–hope you’re also enjoying ranking players strictly by plus-minus. My goodness.

  37. Sinister_Mr_19

Sounds like we’re aiming to get Daws and Akira back to the AHL to properly develop and put Allen in as backup for VV when he comes back.

  38. Subject1337

So lots of angry comments in here… The logic as I see it is that the season is a wash, but Fitz doesn’t want to keep Daws and Schmid up here getting peppered every night and destroying their confidence.

This move lets us put a body in net for all the ugly losses we’re about to face, keep one of the young guys as the backup, and then send the other to Utica to play more games in a place where they’ll actually perform.

It’s a move for development, not necessarily to help us out on the winning front. Fitz knows the season is cooked. Now he’s plugging holes so that the ship doesn’t sink further, and that we can get a fresh start next year. We’ll probably still pick someone up in the offseason. Allan is just a stopgap.

  39. NJDevs30

In before Fitz playing the long game and getting a #1 this offseason for Allen to backup. 21 games for Allen this season. Fitz definitely has a plan for a #1

  40. dustinabox

Frank Seravelli clarified that the games played condition is exclusively for the 2024-25 season, so basically if Allen is our starter next year we trade a 2 and stay a lottery team.

  41. zufhioo

Maybe fitz shouldn’t have fired lindy because now he is taking all incoming criticisms. Can’t hide behind lindy anymore

  42. HockeyFan_37

If I’m reading correctly, Shesterkin, Ullmark, Saros, Georgiev, Oettinger, and Adin Hill are all some form of UFA or RFA over the next few seasons.

This sub screams to get someone of that caliber but fails to understand keeping cap space open and roster flexible will enable Fitz to pin a GM to their own just like the Meier trade when everyone marveled that we didnt have to give up Holtz or Mercer.

Allen is here so Daws and Co. can continue to get reps without their confidence blown out. The goalie market just clearly wasnt there. We were never getting Ullmark for Toffoli 1 for 1. We were never getting Markstrom for a 7th and Considerations at 90% retained. Even if we did get Markstrom at a great deal this sub still would’ve shit its collective pants that Fitz didn’t get the *right* goalie.

Waiting until a quality goalie is available when we have trade leverage is the right move. Teams just bought in big to make their first/last big push. Make them pay for it later on.

The impatient, reactionary, and overly emotional nature of this sub has become insufferable.

  43. junkyardpig

Listen if we play only 2 forwards at a time we can play Allen and Daws at the same time and they can lie down and stack up on top of each other and build a little wall

  44. BFT9000

Wow. This was not the goalie trade anyone wanted. Thanks Fitzy.

  45. Grimmer097

Wow, I legitimately thought this was a joke. This is an awful trade and the Habs have got to be laughing their ads of that unloaded their baggage for a decent pick
