It was up to him to convince management and coaching staff to not send him down. He did not play well enough to do that and that’s on him. Rookies getting sent down for any reason is the nature of the NHL.

This tweet makes it sound like he does not in fact, understand it.

  2. ThymeIsTight

Great! Let’s channel that emotion into some goals and responsible 2-way play, Nicky Bobby.

  3. FootwearFetish69

I like Nick but there’s not much to read into here. He’s a middling player who hasn’t justified being in the lineup 100% of the time. Part of the business.

  4. Was it just between him and knies who were waiver eligible? Or was there one more person like McMann, Holmberg?

  5. Svalbard38

Good, use that fire. You’re not going to be given the spot, it’s time to take it.

  6. Shadowbladez337

I mean, that’s the correct attitude. Would be more concerning if he was perfectly ok with being sent down for any reason.

  7. crushade

I’m glad he’s upset about it. My hope is that he uses that angst to better himself. He has to understand why guys like Holmberg, McMann and sometimes Gregor are in the lineup while he sits.

Nicky is not a big guy but neither is Marner. Use his speed and skill to be defensively responsible, *then* he’ll get to showcase his amazing shot more often. I’m rooting for him!

  8. brobourne

He needs to commit to defensive responsibilities and intensely as he forechecks. He’s great at the forecheck and getting in there, but his defensive game is so passive that he becomes unplayable. His last game I counted three defensive zone turnovers in one shift. Play smart and simple. Win battles.

  9. GettingBlaisedd

Honeslty I think it’s fair for him to be upset. He’s numbers are fine for his age and what he’s used for. He’s seen his linemates who are only recently performing better (domi, mcmann) get more opportunity than him. Hell holmberg got to play first line for a couple games and Nick is stuck on the 3rd pretty much no matter what

  10. MetalPunk125

There’s blame on both sides here. I’m a Robertson fan, he’s played well in bursts and the talent is there. But he needs to be more consistent to take a lineup spot permanently.

Leafs are guilty of way too much yo-yoing and not putting him in positions to succeed on the roster. 5 mins on the 4th line is not going to do anything for him.

  11. incredibad29

People in this comment thread acting like we aren’t starting Reeves and Kampf, even with Nick’s somewhat recent downturn despite a 40 point pace.

  12. Menessy27

    Play better lol

    Mcmann took his spot

1 goal in 15 games for a one dimensional goal scorer isn’t cutting it

That one goal was also the 9th goal in a 9-2 win. Completely meaningless

  13. No_Inspector_6917

Be a professional. Put the team first. I love him and think he should be on the team from jump but keep quiet and do your work and there will be a spot for you.

  14. sroberts12

I don’t blame him, but it’s kind of a bad look to show your frustration to the media. He hasn’t earned a permanent spot in the lineup.

  15. sokocanuck

There will be injuries and he needs to step up and prove he can fill in and keep a position.

  16. theultimatew0rrier

worth mentioning that ryan reeves basically said the same thing after getting hurt/benched and ended up playing much more effectively once they did give him another shot.

hope he does the same, plenty of room to step up with the top line being a bit quiet lately

  17. GritGrinder

I’m not going to pretend I’m happy he can’t secure himself a roster spot at this point either

  18. Reggae4Triceratops

I’m just gonna assume he means « happy with himself », cause that’s really all he can blame.

    !nhlcompare <Bobby McMann, Nicholas Robertson> [2023-10-01 to 2024-03-11]

Since Robertson doesn’t play C, we can assume McMann had taken his spot. McMann has more goals, more shots, better +/-, and 1 less point, nearly identical S%, and a little less average TOI. And most importantly HE NEEDS WAIVERS.

Edit: guess the bot is broken or I fucked up. Source: trust me bro.

  19. Pivotalrook

You’re not your brother, you’re a fringe NHL player, sucks to socks?

  20. Infinite_Physics220

Worry about staying healthy and producing before getting upset about contracts and playing time.

  21. TheOneWithThePorn12

Unless you are filling a role the leafs can’t replace you don’t really get to say that.

Play good enough so that they can’t send you down even if they wanted to.

  22. Bojarzin

I’m assuming most of you didn’t even read the article.

    > « I want to play, but I understand my contract situation. Obviously, if it wasn’t the way it was maybe it would be a different situation but it is what it is.

    and

    > « I don’t know what the day is going to look like day-to-day if it’s skate by myself or with the team, » Robertson said. « I’m just keeping my phone on standby and keep doing what I’m doing and make manageable with the reps I get and just be happy to be with the boys »

Those sound a whole lot different than the idea that his patience is tested lol. Every player wants to play, he says he gets why his contract situation made him the one to go down, but obviously no one is going to be *happy* that they’re the one who has to be used that way

    > « Every year I’m learning something new with the cap situation. I think I’m getting more knowledge to become an assistant GM one day, » Robertson joked. « When you think you’re in the clear and then all of a sudden you didn’t know — I have no idea. There’s a bunch of stuff. Obviously, you have to fit in the cap. That’s the main thing. But the roster spot. I’m more knowledgeable on it now than I was before. »

    > Robertson was happy with the fact that he remained a Leaf as the trade deadline came and went nothing he didn’t want a « change of scenery »

NHL player wants to play NHL hockey, like of course he does lol

  23. Darkenmal

Get gud, kid. The team’s management is running out of patience with you.

  24. Takhar7

Good. Get angry. Be pissed off. Show it in your play, and earn a roster spot.

When fringe NHLers are beating you to the punch, what do you expect?

  25. riko77can

I think the single most important thing is that Robertson did *not* say it “tested his patience” and that part was nothing but an assumption by the reporter, or if you will: insidious media speculation.

Alter is a shit disturber. Don’t pay him any attention.

  26. witwar101

I get his frustration. He’s been back and forth for like 4 years and has had injury problems as well. But he hasn’t found any kind of consistency in the NHL. He’s had a few little flashes here and there but he’s mostly invisible out there. I’ve been rooting for him for what feels like forever now, but he just hasn’t earned a full time spot.

  27. Super_Gur957

Dude is a completely one dimensional player. He can shoot the puck. That is it. And he doesn’t even do it that well in the NHL.

  28. Lazy_Glass_3292

Tested his patience?? Dude how many chances do you want

  29. Gruz420

They didn’t do that to Matthews or Marner. So maybe do what they do…

  30. Substantial_Rip_9311

Would have been great trade bait. Maybe him a 5th rounder would have gotten us Dumba or even worse, Toffoli.

  31. 2BRacin

If he grew 4 inches taller and played better this wouldn’t be an issue.

  32. Rwedgie

People who think they should trade Robertson don’t realize he doesn’t have much in the way of trade value. You might not even get a 3rd for him. So your far better off to keep him wether he likes his playing time or not.

  33. irishcedar

Boy he’s going to be really upset when he watches the playoffs from the press box.

  34. Sirrebral99

Knies is also waiver exempt and could have been loaned down for paper transactions. But he wasn’t, because he’s been impactful and a difference maker out there (most nights). Sorry to say it, but be a difference maker and you won’t get scratched…

  35. lildillmp3

Let him go, so sick of this team. Dude will undoubtedly go blossom somewhere else just like everyone else does when they leave our franchise.

  37. jjarry13

I get Mike Hoffman vibes from Robertson. He’s a very good shooter but pretty suspect when not scoring. Robertson isn’t good enough to play high in the lineup on the Leafs, and doesn’t fit in the bottom six.

I won’t be surprised if he’s traded away this summer to bring in a better fit or given a fresh start

  38. burningxmaslogs

Shame he wasn’t traded to another team just to give him a better chance of playing at the deadline.

  39. JohnYCanuckEsq

Is it fair to say Bobby McMann has passed him on the depth chart?

  40. cappo40

Why can’t you be more like your brother?
