Treliving peut rééquiper le noyau D et peut-être remplacer Tavares, sans avoir à échanger Matthews, Marner ou Nylander. Je pense que c’est la raison pour laquelle Treliving a été si passif lors de cette date limite commerciale. Il n’est pas stupide et comprend que ce n’est pas l’année pour faire tapis. Ok, mais qu’en est-il du remplacement de Tavares ? Il a régressé au point que n’importe qui d’autre peut jouer son rôle et coûter beaucoup moins cher. Il n’est plus un joueur de 11 millions. Je ne m’attends pas à ce que nous gagnions cette année, mais les mauvaises expériences en séries éliminatoires n’existent pas. Lorsque nous serons prêts à *vraiment* concourir, notre noyau aura déjà été testé en séries éliminatoires. J’espère que nous aurons les Bruins au premier tour, car l’expérience que le noyau obtiendra de cette série ne ressemblera à rien d’autre. Les bons moments arrivent bientôt, mes amis. GLG!

It will be nice for Tavares not to cost 11 million but I do think he resigns with the Leafs, albeit for much cheaper.

Tavares is so old, he’d qualify for the Senate
Cap space is great but it’s not like there are great UFA options out there. Then you’re looking at trade options and likely having to subtract something substantial to acquire anyone good.
Ur comparing a 33 YO who was bid on as a UFA to people in their prime. Okay so let’s say i agree he’s struggling this year.
Tavares last year had the 6th best pt scoring season of all active players in their 32 year old season. The only UFA who had higher than him is panarin with 7 more pts with +2:00 atoi
Of all time players in their 32 year old season Tavares is 26th.
This year he’s on pace for 60, which among active players in their « 33 » year old season would place him at 15th. So saying his production is easy to replace is a massive stretch when this season has been the only blip in his career.

There’s not going to be that much cap space left after they re-sign Mitch though.
I’m of this opinion too.
Now mind you, this is my first season (+ last year’s playoffs), so I don’t have the ingrained trauma, but I am aware of our… history. Maybe that gives me more hope then most all the same.
But like, there’s next year, which’ll be cap crunch hell, sure.
2025-2026 season? It looks fucking BRIGHT. It’s the golden season for potential.
Let’s recap:
-Short of a short and very effective retool/rebuild, Boston and Tampa are both aging out of some of their key players. Tampa looks weaker already this year, Boston is still pretty strong but leas dominant then last year and Marchand’s getting older. They do still have Pasta though. That’s less competition versus a Leafs core that, short of really bad injuries, will be in the perfect balance of their prime vs. experience.
-Cowan and Minten will either make the roster next year, and be on their second for that season, or make it that year. Hildeby may be as well.
-Assuming no trades of some of the newer guys (Knies, Woll, Benoit, etc.) they’ll have more experience and hopefully be all the better.
-Tavares and Marner’s contracts are up. Marner will almost definitely be renewed (and should be), but Tavares will either have to take a much cheaper contract or walk. That, and the two increases in salary cap between now and then (assuming no more bullshit prevents it) puts us in a GREAT spot for salary cap.
-Treliving’s already managed to swing the team in a different direction that we haven’t seen before. We’re grittier, tougher, there’s more of a sense of a “team” with heart then ever before if you go off what others are saying. These are HUGE changes, especially for playoff success. And Treliving’s not a hair-trigger guy, he’s patient. If he’s had this much of an impact on the team’s culture & playstyle to such a positive degree already, what can he do with another two offseasons and more cap to work with?
-To that end, Treliving also can make a fucking effective D core. We already have some great pieces; McCabe and Benoit are a nutty pairing and have exactly what we need for playoffs hockey. Opinions are mixed on Brodie & Liljegren, but common consensus is we just need a true top line D partner for Rielly. With the extra cap space from (hopefully) annual increases between then and now, a smart Tavares negotiation, and some luck, we might be able to get a true Top 2. And Treliving has shown an excellent ability to pick out really effective depth pieces for really cheap, so I expect he can work that cap situation.
-Speaking of cap, we have a shitton of people coming off LTIR this year! Of course, someone could be injured. But if he’s willing to use it, Treliving could use the LTIR space to pull Vegas shenanigans next season or in the golden season.
Like, fuck man. I know I’m dreaming big, but what a fucking season that could be.
If they resign Marner and Tavares odds are that it will only be a few million in savings. It’ll help but it’s not a guarantee of success.
I was of the opinion a few weeks ago that Tavares would re-sign around 5 for 3 years, but that first number is dropping.
What are the chances the Tavares signs for a 3 mil range for 4-5 years or heck even give us a league min contract for 3 years kinda like Spezza he’d save us a lot of money and he’s also earned top $ when he came here
