  1. I agree on a personal and human level. But also he’s a professional athlete making $3.5 million for one year in the largest hockey market in North America. You’re under a microscope and getting paid well to do the thing. Be prepared for criticism when you aren’t doing the thing. I’m so glad he’s currently doing the thing and very well.

  2. Camarama421

I feel like everyone was rightfully critical of him when he was objectively one of the worst goalies in the league over a large stretch, and everyone has been rightfully praising him for his amazing play since coming back up. I never saw anyone attacking him personally or anything of the sort, everyone knows he’s a great guy. This feels like someone who’s just going along with the “Toronto media bad” narrative even though no one was really being unfairly hard on him

  3. cutarm_creature

The Toronto media are also ridiculously annoying. I am a Leaf fan, but never read any articles from the reporters covering them. They ask the dumbest questions and have insane speculations. I think it was last year we lost game 1 of the season, a headline I saw suggested the season was done, what’s wrong with the Leafs blah blah blah. It’s click bait and views for their shitty articles.

  4. footwith4toes

Hockey players are incredibly soft. I generally disagree with Sid Seixeiro but what he said recently about Toronto media on the SDPN nailed it on the head.

  5. CashComprehensive423

The hardest position mentally is being a goalie.

  6. another_plebeian

Sammy good, Sammy bad, Sammy good

Fans say Sammy good, fans say Sammy bad, fans say Sammy good

  7. TheOneWithThePorn12

Everyone treated Sammy with kid gloves. They love the guy.

  8. billcosbyinnocence

I means he’s not wrong. Half the sub was begging for him to be waived earlier

  9. matthewsisaleaf50

I received three notifications today about how Sammy was hurt at practice and how it was terrible news for Toronto. Not one notification or update about how he is fine and will be starting tonight. Media and the drive for click bait is terrible in general.

  10. Flashy_Ferret_1819

The Toronto media isn’t really all that tough on the Leafs, players and management. Very quick to praise and very slow to criticize. It’s just There is a ton of it.

Sammy was one of the worst goalies in the league for the first half and what players expect *NO* criticism or negative press? I didn’t hear one thing negative about him personally, just his play. Radio, TV, and print media that is based in Toronto that is very hard on the Leafs are few and far between.

  11. Heatersthebest

These stories I can just never understand. Don’t you want to play in a city that just loves the sport and can’t get enough of it?

Like the best footballers in the world want to play for the biggest clubs and they get unreal attention, like way more scrutiny than the Leafs…

LeBron goes to the Lakers, Cole goes to the Yankees, Ohtani to the Dodgers, these are huge teams with massive followings and I never hear about players complaining about the media.

Why are hockey players, most, not all, so soft about something like this????

  12. terminese

What does he want, he was a train wreck at the beginning of the year. I’m so happy for him that he figured shit out.

  13. DifferentCod5606

That’s how it always is in Toronto. That’s why you dont go to Toronto.

  14. in-dog_we_trust

Toronto media has always been hard on the Leafs. But they can also sing the praise of some players. Playing in Toronto is not for everyone. Some people can’t handle it others thrive under it.
I don’t live in the Toronto area anymore so I may be wrong but I think once everyone really started to understand what was wrong with Sammy they backed off. He was having a very bad no good horrible season. Then we understood it was partially because of mental health issues (and the press can certainly do that to a guy) there was a lot of oh ok well let’s hope he gets help, treatment, better. Now he is back and looks better then ever.

  15. Secondusx

This guy did one too many lines of coke.

  16. smuddge000

This guy is spot on. Other city’s support their players. Cheer for them and try and bring them up when things aren’t good. Here it’s all criticism. Its is in my opinion part of the reason we can’t play in playoffs. Last team we had that could truly ignore the noise in Toronto was the 90’s Gilmour teams.

We run every goalie into the ground….

  17. __Dave_

I really don’t remember the media being particularly mean. They reported on what was happening.

The fans on the other hand, we’re pretty nasty.

  18. TimbitSizedTesticles

Who cares about the opinion of a washed up cokehead? Sammy has been playing well, but there was a stretch where he deserved the criticism.

  19. sumguy91

Don’t forget this is coming from a guy who’s celly is a bird flying. Guys stupid

  20. BaconWrappedEnigma

I stick by my sentiment that NHL players are the softest of any sport. The media here is bad?? All they said was « he’s playing poorly » when he was playing poorly! The media, if anything, is not nearly critical enough when the team is bad.

  21. hello2561

This is why babies like Kuznetsov don’t play here.

  22. BabyGoatCheese

I hate the Toronto media but the Leafs are my favourite team. The Toronto media is unbearable at times and it’s clear they will write whatever articles they have to get views and they clearly don’t give a fuck about the team, only interested in making money and making speculations for clickbait.

  23. RapsareChamps_Suckit

Kuz needs rehab not a Hurricanes stint

  24. Jmac24mats13

He’s right. Overdrive which I love has been questioning the starter position all week(not the usual 3 hosts but still) while Sammy is 13-2 in his last 15 and somehow they bring up if Woll should be the starter come playoffs. I don’t get it at all. I know they have to have something to talk about but people just sound dumb suggesting right now Sammy isn’t our starter at the playoffs

  25. MotherTalzin

lol this reminds me of the King of the Hill “if those kids could read they’d be very upset” meme

  26. MobysBanned

Guys clearly never heard of Mark Spector

  27. brownmagician

He’s not wrong. Sportsnet and TSN and then all of the print and digital media can be assholes about a player

  28. TDavy147

    Boo hoo

Go see how European media treats their teams. Then come back and realize you guys get it easy

  29. It sounds like he trying to make Sammy looks mentally weak. Like… If he knew English well, he will be devastated. Same shit when Tampa was playing Toronto, everyone trying to make Sammy look bad. Sammy understood the assignment, he was honest about his play, worked on himself and came back strong as fuck. Sammy is the perfect goalie for this team atm.

  30. SeeGodKai

Anyone else scrolling to the left thanks to the screenshot?

  31. AcceptableYou4919

Cry me a river he played horribly for a whole month in a big hockey market

  32. arctikat

Really don’t need a Russian lecturing us how to treat others

  33. redditzane

NHL media in Toronto is paper soft compared to reporters in other sports. Go and see what they say about players in the NFL down in the US after a bad game, night and day.

  34. Big-Peak6191

Toronto will praise you when you do well. Rip you when you suck.

    Water is wet.

    Next.

  35. StoneColdSteveAss316

I remember earlier this year man this place was TORCHING him

  36. captainbelvedere

Was it that bad? He was playing horrible hockey and people talked about it. He’s playing really well again, and people are talking about that.

  37. Nonsense. I thought the media and most fans were largely reasonable. He was objectively unplayable at the beginning, and he received a lot of slack from the media and from the fans. All the while I felt the general sentiment was that he was a good dude being hard on himself and everyone was hopeful that he would bounce back, which he did.

  38. hards04

This shit is such a joke. Compare our media to Dallas cowboys, united, real Madrid, Yankees…it’s easy. Easiest out of any of them. We’re the biggest team in hockey. Compared to our peers clowns like Steve Simmons and Damien sucks my Cox are tame in comparison.
