It was worth a shot but they didn't have nearly as much movement on the puck as they should have this time. love the experimenting though.

Literally on my way home from the game right now…appreciate the attempt, but with Thompson looking shaky at the end of the 3rd I thought we’d have a better shot getting through OT and trying the shootout. Ohhh well. Thought we played some of our best hockey today regardless.

This is why don't do it. End up with zero points. It would only make sense if you needed two points to make the playoffs in your last game of the season. Then it might be worth it, if you think that you can't win in the shootout.

"You rarely see this move". Yeah, that's because there's a significantly higher chance that the other team scores. Analytics show that a 6v5 scenario, or in this case a 4v3 scenario, scores 6.39 goals per 60 minutes of play, versus the team with the empty net scoring on average 19.16 goals per 60 minutes of play.
Even in a standard scenario when you are down by one goal and pull your goalie (average goalie pull time is around 2 minutes when down by one goal or more), your odds of scoring in the time that you pull your goalie are only 14.5%.
What you really can't quantify statistically is if pulling your goalie actually helps you win late games when down by a goal versus normal 5v5, or if it only helps statistically look better, since we don't have much late game 5v5 stats since most teams pull their goalie if down by one score. You could argue that since in most cases the other team scores, thus making your chances even slimmer, that there is possibility of better odds when all said and done of just continuing 5v5. I'd love to see some comparison stats of chances of 5v5 late game scores versus pulling the goalie, and subsequent goal scores by the other team after pulling your goalie.
