My immediate thought was “damn I was hoping the team would get younger”.
I’m glad I was wrong
I was completely on board with the ROR signing, it was easier to understand than Nyquist IMO because we had so many young wingers on the cusp it seemed.
Nyquist may be my MVP for this team this season. Certainly been a catalyst at 5v5 and on the PP. He’s been rock solid.
Honestly I wonder how much of this decision was less to try and win now and more to give all the young guys men to learn under
I had absolutely no idea he has 71 points, thats absurd. Thought he was around like 60 honestly
Its too early to say for sure, but I’m very happy with Trotz’s approach. I’m one of those people that have never believed that the only option to get a cup is to blow it all up and tank for years. Every team has the same cap space and the ability to trade, why can’t a team piece together enough talent to seriously contend?
There are two situations in the hunt usually:
1) a McDavid team with a superstar or two and not much else because them superstars become very expensive over time
2) a team lacking a true superstar, that has more balanced lines and a blend of young and vet talent.
Teams can give up a few superstar goals if their 4th/3rd line is absolutely dunking on the other teams.
To me, this is as likely to produce a cup as the blow it up route, only this doesnt require the worst performance in the league for several years, or hinge on superstars that can be broken at anytime.
I love the mentality of pairing vets, the right vets rather, with the younger guys. Look at teams like Ottawa and Anaheim (more Ottawa really but I love throwing shade at the ducks, lol) and how they crumble despite talent, or their young stars aren’t really developing. It’s not always managed well is all I’m saying.
Too early to say, and this is the time when we’d be most hopeful. Let’s see how the rest of the season plays out
