The Salt Lake City Mormons! Can that be the team name?

It’s going to happen, isn’t it!

  2. Nice_Wolverine_4641

It’s finally happening! A mistake was made in 1996 and this is it being acknowledged. If only the Winnipeg Jets could hand them their final L

  3. NearHadesEdge

Honestly I’m just sad for coyotes fans. They deserve better than this

  4. davidgoldstein2023

Phoenix youth hockey is really big and this is a huge blow to the sport for hockey fans. I feel like the Coyotes are the Athletics of hockey.

  5. HotHits630

At least change the name of the Coyotes if they move. Utah Jazz?

  6. Hefty_Meringue8694

I’d be down for Utah Snowbirds

  7. Habsfan_2000

There are plenty of other cities that could use hockey teams, like San Jose, Chicago or Toronto.

  8. drhenrykillenger

Name them the SLC Punks you cowards!

  9. JazzYotesRSL

As a Coyotes fan, I would be devastated. I want them to stay in Phoenix. But as a Coyotes fan living in Salt Lake, if they have to move, please let them move here.

    Quebec City gets cucked again

Honestly, I’m sad for Coyotes fans in Arizona…. And Salt Lake City!?!? Really!?! The NHL needs to do better.

  12. VanillaLoaf

The Salt Lake City (Latter Day) Saints.

I hate how some people are excited for this.

It sucks for those people who did watch and did care for the team. It sucks for them that the coyotes failed to put a better product on for the people in Arizona and they were always run like a complete clown show.

I don’t blame the NHL for wanting to keep them there: a better more well run team would catch on (not dissimilar to Vegas). Phoenix would work with a better run team.

Yotes fans, I’ll pour a cold one for you. You were done dirty by the people running your team.

I don’t really know the numbers for Arizona before the arena stuff started happening….but isnt it one of the best southern areas to put hockey maybe only after florida?

Like theres Canadians retired down there milling about like a plague that slowly crept in when no one was paying attention.

I can’t see many Canadians being in Utah….

Not that theres not american hockey fans its just a little extra boost having dying rich Canadians just laying around in the sun waiting for an ambulance already…….

  15. w_d_roll_RIP

The worst part of American sports is their willingness to move teams, and the fact that many fans fully support moving teams

I can see Gary granting Phoenix an expansion franchise down the road but they’d have to have an area in place before that happens. Moving the Yotes to Salt Lake would be to restore stability in that particular franchise.

At least this article by Kaplan and Wyshynski tells the full story, unlike Seravalli’s clickbait “breaking news, Coyotes are confirmed gone!” posts gunning for easy clicks/interaction.

This is a quick backup plan if the arena deal gets torpedoed. Gutierrez (CEO) openly said they’re looking into the available relocation options as contingency plans in case this arena deal falls through and they can’t make it happen in AZ.

Arena deal is still reportedly looking good, aside from the Scottsdale mayor yelling at the clouds for attention, but we won’t know until it’s done – one way or another.

The one thing that adds credibility to relocating as a viable/beneficial option for the current owner is that, unlike most relocations, this would be a multi-part sale that would pay Meruelo out AND generate a revenue split for other owners once “re-sold” to the new owner – which is why they usually love expansion over relocation. They like getting a payout.

Still, arena deal is in the works, so it’s all just talk right now.

  18. good_guy112

I say move this team to SLC then just expand and have the return of the desert dogs when they finish the new arena.

  19. ecash6969

I think Utah can work it’s cold there

  20. pooinmypants1

Utah deserves a new franchise team not a relocation team.

  21. ResolutionNumber9

If they trade for Marchand, they could be the salt licks!

  22. Congrats to Utah for winning the upcoming draft lottery!

  23. ttchamps0203

    A few name suggestions:

SLC Soakers, SLC 3.2s, SLC Polygamists

On a more serious note how will logistics of potentially them and the Jazz sharing an arena work out when you would now have 2 tenants who can’t play home games on Sundays with the LDS rules prohibiting that?

  24. cakeeater27

How are the Coyotes worth $1.3 billion? Without an arena, and assuming $300 million is basically a relocation fee, they’re still worth $1 billion.

That’s as much as the Canucks, and more than Detroit, Pittsburgh, TB, Seattle, Colorado, Vegas, Calgary, Dallas, Minnesota, St. Louis, Nashville, Ottawa, Anaheim, SJ, Carolina, Winnipeg, Florida, Columbus and Buffalo.

  25. InspectorRound8920

Do you think SLC will offer better support? Shut down the franchise

  26. soupyc44

How would an NHL franchise survive it a city that size?

  27. freedom51Joseph

I think Utah will be a cool location!

  28. OG_anunoby3

Auston Matthews could have saved that franchise. I’m a leafs fan, but gotta admit, he would have been the attraction they needed to sell and convince the city to get a new arena.

  29. tripod689

Considering most players are party animals, no player will want to play there and will continue the trend of being a poverty franchise

  30. Attey21

If SLC gets the coyotes I’ll be stoked. Never been to an NHL game. Been to Utah Grizzlies games here and they are a blast. May really get into the NHL if it happens.

  31. KeyEntertainer804

Great. Just great. I’d rather have nothing at all.

  32. ILSmokeItAll

Do they take Winnipeg’s record books with them? lol

  33. DennisSystemofADown

Awesome. Rabid fan base. Will be a tough road game for sure and create some cool rivalries within the almost entirely northwest division.

  34. International_Fee878

Call me an idiot, but wouldnt kansas city be a better option for an expansion team? Playing at t-mobile center for example?
