1. No pol wants to be the reason a team left. This mayor wanted to play hardball but now realizing his comments will likely be looked at as the straw that broke the camel's back.

  2. Arizona will get the Coyotes (West) back after they build a new arena. Atlanta (East) & Houston (West) will also get teams. Another club is needed in the East to get to a balanced 36-team league. What Eastern USA city would work? Bettman may have settle for Quebec City, or maybe put a second team in Toronto – Leafs play in the heart of downtown Toronto (south). Second team could play in the north metro area (Markham / Richmond Hill / Vaughn) if the Leafs are OK with it.

  3. I think the Tempe rejection was the nail in the coffin. Behind the scenes, I think the NHL was working on a sale the whole time.

  4. Thanks for the update. I'm glad that the mayor of Scottsdale is taking a more reasoned approach. Since the land is not in Scottsdale, I can see how it is possible that the mayor was not in the loop and had legitimate concerns. I continue to believe that his prior response while possibly understandable, was still inappropriate. Correcting that response and setting forth his concerns that truly represent his City is appropriate.

  5. Well, the "rookie" developer will now likely pocket over $1B and not have to deal with our sleazy low rent politicians. My second favorite team was always the Sharks and have attended several games at the Shark Tank. Now I can follow their rebuild and hope the poor souls in the bay area can afford to attend games beyond the ugly AHL looking stands of this season. Inflation is hard, but particularly in California as your state governance is doing you no favors as well.

  6. 27 years ago today, our beloved HARTFORD WHALERS played their final game in Connecticut. We send out our deepest condolences to the fans of the Arizona Coyotes. Losing your team is beyond gut wrenching and heartbreaking. We understand.

  7. Doesn’t really matter. This was going to be a $4-5B development. Muerello may have enough to buy the land but he doesn’t to fund the development and I haven’t really seen any major investors or finance partners lined up for this. The real reason is that there just isn’t time and tons of litigation and injunctions were likely to add further delay. Muerello makes money on this and has time to gather investors and maybe even partner with Suns ownership for a multipurpose arena downtown a few years down the road. This all came down to timing.

  8. If you can remember the Edmonton Oilers we’re going to move to Houston. At 11:59 Edmonton time all of the sudden Edmonton get a new Arena.

  9. Yeah, its the major of Scottsdale's fault they're leaving and not the 25+ yrs of mismanagement

  10. Hello!! What about the Winnipeg Jets fans back in 96 who lost their team? Then for almost 30 years see a clown car of owners, facilities issues, and the team sucked! It was one mistake after another! Bettman should have never this move on unless an arena, where the population and season ticket holder live, was planned and built for hockey within five years. Don’t give me Glendale was built. Nothing wrong with the facility. But it’s not where the population base is.

  11. The only reason this termite is "walking back" his position is that he's now watching his political career go up in smoke. His language, his haughtiness, his megalomania has expressed itself. In his delusions of authority he alone declared that the Coyotes were not worthy of being even next door to Scottsdale, and had "demanded" that the State do this and that – essentially making an ass of himself. I doubt that anybody in Scottsdale – the Council, City Attorney, planners would have ever sanctioned a letter with that condescending and dismissive tone. As for his whining about "we weren't consulted!", there wasn't time to do much of anything, and furthermore what is to consult about when Meruelo doesn't even own the damn property yet??…I wish David Ortega luck in his future of selling used cars…Scottsdale, congratulations. You now get nothing…

  12. sounds to me like the Scottdale mayor will be looking for a new job next election. What a clown.

  13. what the hell happened at the glendale arena , what's the true reason for being 2.4 million in back rent.

  14. I think people in Scottsdale will push this to go into a referendum, and, if it goes into a democratic vote, they won't approve this.

  15. Now that the Coyotes have announced they're moving to Salt Lake, he's all for it! CYA Mayor Ortega. Don't worry….. None of the hate is focused on you, Alex Meruelo. It's clear your focus are the Bars and Resturants of your city. I do think the Mayor is short sighted; But it really doesn't matter. I thinking Meruelo will be A NO SHOW AT THE AUCTION and take his CASH GRAB and run back to Reno! WHAT A P.O.S.! Alex Meruelo never gave a damn about the fans.😢

  16. He was pressured to change his mind. The cartels were behind his change of mind.

  17. Well, what keeps him from changing his mind again (?) Nothing. And that's what the NHL is sick of — rightly so . . .

  18. So how many years and chances do you think you should get to keep the team there. It's already a running joke that has went on way to long

  19. As a Utah resident, I don't think that an NHL team will be successful here. It's really not a hockey city/state. That's just in my stupid opinion that means nothing.
