How did LA win the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014 and not win their division?

The Hartford Whalers won their division the same year the Oilers last won their division.
Also, the Kings and Islanders have both won their division after the Oilers did.
NYI won in 1988, Kings did in 1991.

Also, the Nordiques need to be added to the left group.

It shocks me that LA hasn’t won their division, yet Buffalo, who has not made the playoffs in 13 seasons, did.

I know division champions are mostly meaningless but I still enjoy knowing the Flames have won 8 divisions since the last time the Oilers had one, and that Edmonton has still not raised a banner with McDavid.
