When T.J. Oshie’s [back is at its worst](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2023/01/21/tj-oshie-back-injury-recovery-capitals/?itid=lk_inline_manual_2), the Washington Capitals winger can’t pick up his children, let alone lace up his skates.

Often, he can’t even stand up. He spends most of the time, in fact, “on the floor, peeing in water bottles,” until he sees the chiropractor that brings him relief — a relief that proved to be all too temporary throughout the season.

The double ablation Oshie underwent last April helped somewhat, but it was never intended, Oshie said at Washington’s season-ending media availability on Tuesday, to be a permanent solution.

“It was kind of short-term fix thing and something that we had tried a couple times throughout the season, and it helped with a couple other things,” Oshie said. “But my issue is there’s not just one problem back there. There’s multiple things that we’ve got to find an answer for.”

If Oshie is unable to find an answer, his time playing for the Capitals may be over. The 37-year-old, who has been Washington’s talisman [since he was acquired in a trade from the St. Louis Blues in July 2015](https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/capitals/capitals-stay-busy-acquire-tj-oshie-from-st-louis-in-three-player-deal/2015/07/02/960e06a4-20fe-11e5-bf41-c23f5d3face1_story.html?itid=lk_inline_manual_8), wants to keep playing. He just doesn’t know if it’s going to be possible.

What’s clear is that he doesn’t want to go through another season walking a tightrope like he did this year. Oshie missed 30 games in the regular season, some because of a concussion in November and the rest because of his ongoing back issues.

“In my mind, it would be hard for me to ever for sure say that I’m stepping away from the game,” Oshie said. “I’d love to play next year, but I will need to come back with somewhat of a guarantee that my back won’t be — it’s hard putting everyone through the situation. From my family at home to the team trying to figure out a lineup to young guys getting called up and going down. I’d like to find just an answer and a fix to the problem before I make another run at it.”

Thank god for the extra time being eliminated so early. I thought it was over after this year anyway with how beat up he is, had no idea it was so bad.

Also, find it hilarious how Reddit users too often call chiropractors snake oil salesman and how it’s pseudo-therapy, yet I’ve heard from countless athletes now that have their multitude of non descript problems made far better and livable after seeing theirs.

Maybe he should see a physical therapist instead of a fuckin’ chiropractor.

    Or a doctor?

    Love the guy, but c’mon.

And if anyone’s inclined to downvote, do some reading: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiropractic

    > Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine … It has esoteric origins and is based on several pseudoscientific ideas

You know what they call alternative medicine that works? Medicine. Physical therapists are medical professionals; chiropractors are not.

It’s not that all chiropractors never do anything at all helpful… but anything helpful they do could most likely be done as well or better by a medical professional.

Thank you for attending my TED rant.

So you remember that time during a break when Osh slipped in his driveway? I always wonder if that was the moment his disk gave out.
