He does not say exactly who but, seeing as Kevin Weekes was the one heavily amplifying this and said those exact words on TSN it’s clear who it was.

It’s ridiculous that guys like Kevin are taking shots at the team, dragging ownership and all because they feel like Rod is getting taking advantage of.

Yet Rod is happy, has a deal in place and is just going through the normal negotiations…

  2. Harlaxt0n

Just give this man the blank check and let’s go destroy the effing Rags please!

  3. depressedNCdad

i doubt anyone can take advantage of ROD

  4. Venaixis94

Speaking on someone’s behalf like this is kind of shitty in my opinion.

  5. Caniac1017

Dundon should not allow Weekes back in the building. Fucking washed clowns like him, Wesley, O’Neill always taking shots at the team.

  6. TADspace

I don’t think Rod needs a white knight in shining armor to get him a pay increase, but what do I know, these people make more money in a single year than I will in more than 10 (and that’s being super generous).

  7. dben302

    Tinfoil hat time!

This is all just fake news from New York media trying to cause a distraction during the Rags series.

  8. Scottstark1210

It’s hard to say anyone can take advantage of Rod the Bod, BUT it seems Dundon does take time to evaluate things. Not evaluating Rod at this time, but the assistants. I’m sure Rod and Dundon have had conversations regarding the assistants contracts for months now at this point.

  9. lol imagine thinking someone was taking advantage of *Rod Brind’Amour*. Dude isn’t like every coach, he’s made his money already as a player. I do get them being upset that he takes less though, but at the same time, maybe just worry about winning games yourself and you will get paid more?

  10. Dismal_Estate_4612

Rod absolutely could get paid more on the open market for another team, but that’s only « being taken advantage of » if Rod wants to move jobs and is being prevented from doing so. He wants to stay in Carolina, he knows that loses him some pay negotiation leverage, and he’s fine with it. At a certain point, particularly when you’re already rich, the extra pay bump is worth less than job satisfaction – don’t know why that’s so hard for media to understand.

(I do know why, they want clicks.)

  11. wackychimp

Rod seems like the kind of guy who only wants to focus on **hockey** during the season and especially playoffs.

He’s already made his millions, the Stanley Cup has his name on it, he’s in no rush to work out a deal while the team is prepping for the biggest challenge of the season.

These talking heads are just trying to get clicks. SMH

  12. Car-Hockey2006

I don’t know how many of you have met RBA, and I certainly do not intend to intimate that he and I are buddies, or that we’ve met more than a few times. But as a STH from 2006-2014, I met him several times during that span, and I find the notion that random people on his periphery need to stand up for him utterly laughable.

I’ve led a charmed life, met a lot of important people despite being not important myself. Generals, Governors, Senators, Nobel Prize winners, billionaire CEO’s, Supreme Ct justices. Very, very few of them made an impression on me the way RBA did. Dude is *intense*. Even at a damn perfunctory professional sports team glad handing meet-and-greet, he commanded his corner of the room. You absolutely got the notion that if he looked you in the eye and said give me 20 pushups, you would damn well knock out 20 pushups with perfect form *right then*.

He IS the franchise, period. Everyone from the popcorn vendor to Dundon understands this.

  13. Cooks_8

From what I have seen Rod is in high demand, he had all the leverage. So this report seems off

  14. SokkasBoomerang3

Someone else put it in a good way/

Kevin Weekend seems like he’s trying to be the NHL version of Stephen A from the NBA.

For those who don’t know- he’s much like Kevin, an analyst, commentator, intermission report guy (he wasn’t a former player though)

But he says THE WEIRDEST STUFF. He has the WORST takes, straight from planet Mars. But that’s what generates clicks, clickbait weird stupid stuff that everyone then starts talking about. It generates views, gets traction, has people talking and it works for him and the industry because they want to be talked about.

It seems like Kevin is trying to do that for the NHL.

I said it before, and I’ll say it again, people are too gullible, and sometimes stupid, in this day and age. They are easy to brainwash and get tricked into thinking one thing to the point of talking about it.

r/hockey’s “Rod is gonna leave” threads are a prime example of gullible brainwashed morons drinking the Kool-Aid, but that’s exactly what reporters want is to get the people in droves talking about nonsense for views and $$$.

  15. quartercoyote

IMO this sounds like manufactured drama. The media needs storylines. This is what the producer has come up with to focus on.

  16. Whoever is claiming to be his friend here is probably just looking to fill their own basket on the back of a Rod deal. I’d be hard pressed to call someone a friend who brings unnecessary bullshit to the team in the middle (more specifically the first quarter) of a playoff run.

  17. WellFuckYourDolphin

Kevin Weakes not a huge Caniac

  18. macaroni_3000

Rod needs to tell all these people to STFU until we’re eliminated or win the Cup. This is getting stupid

  19. JoeMorgue

The weirdest take is how many people came away with this with the idea that someone negotiating means they are in danger of leaving.

Do you honestly think there’s a major sports coach in the world who, outside of very rare edge cases, just signs the first deal he’s offered and doesn’t negotiate somewhat even if they are 100% fully committed to staying?

« Either we give Rod a blank check or he goes to Seattle and that’s our only two options » is such a weird take.

  20. JoeMorgue

« Reports did not account for the fact that Rod’s ‘Blue Peppermint Extra Chewing Gum’ budget and the cost to reinforce the floor the Carolina Hurricane’s Weight Room to account for the massive amounts of weight he lifts are 98% of the team’s operating budget. »

  21. Glad_Inspector5236

They all hate Dundon. They think he’s cheap and not “hockey worthy”. They love nothing better than to say he won’t pay up even though he’s spent to the cap since he’s been here.

  22. CraftyRazzmatazz

Imagine trying to take advantage of someone who rips their shirt off in between periods and does one arm push ups in front of professional hockey players

  23. lil_geesey

Let’s just tell it like it is. This shit isn’t happening in a Boston, New York, or any other “hockey” market. We don’t need media explaining to us rednecks how hockey works.

  24. JosephMcCarthy1955

Apparently everybody cares what Rod gets paid except for Rod himself

  25. Spaceballs83

Rod is such a cool dude. He was eating next to my family with his on one Sunday at Pipers off Falls of Neuse. Couple of people recognized him (including me) but we let him be with family and didn’t want to bother him.
