  1. He’s missed significant time in 4 of the last 6 years, we already have Cernak for that role on the team

I love Cernak so much. But this would be a sick deal.

If the jets were to actually do this deal one for one, its actually a solid deal for both teams. With the emergence of Crozier on the right hand side, along with Perbix we have depth and potential to make up for moving Cernak, especially with McD helping hold down that pairing.

What we are missing next season and the future (as of now) is depth scoring and a legitimate top 6 forward. If Ehlers can stay healthy he can fill that void. That being said, Im not sure the jets do a one for one deal for Ehlers

If it was a one for one for Cernak I would do that, it wouldn’t affect our cap too much as he only makes 800k more and you can probably get that retained by either Winnipeg or a third party since he’s a free agent next year.

I don’t think this actually happens though, I think we keep Cernak at least one more year and while I think Winnipeg should keep Ehlers I think they end up trading him for another forward, I don’t think they can afford to lose his offensive output and not replace it with that trade.

Moving Cernak because of his cap hit to …checks notes… acquire another injury prone guy with a higher cap hit?

Don’t get me wrong, some scoring depth would be nice, and a Cernak move would be helpful on the cap, but I feel like we’re already kinda relying on his cap relief to sign the guys we have.

The only way I would like this deal is if Ehlers re-upped around the $6-7 million mark (It Is more likely he signs between $7M and $8M).

On his day, Ehlers is an absolutely fantastic player, and he would slot nicely as LW1 on the Point and Kuch line. He’s been close to 30 goals before, but with Kuch feeding him, he could be a 35-goal guy. Defensively, he works hard. He is a hell of a skater, too.

He will use his body to protect the puck and make some nice feeds in the corner. Expect assists when he’s around. We love a good zone entry in Tampa, and that is one of Ehlers’ strengths.

My only concerns would be his health (although last season he played all 82 games), his age (he’s 29 in February), and the big question would be how much that contract is going to be.

No way this trade happens. Yes both are injury prove but thats really where the similarities end. There’s serious concern wheter cernak will ever return to his previous form and theres a real risk he never does. There’s no questions with regards to Ehlers abilities when he’s healthy. If you’re the jets why would you realistically make this trade unless you’re being forced.

As a dane I’d be absolutely stoked to see Ehlers play for us, but I just dont see this happening

There’s a negative percent chance of this happening.

Don’t think so. I think they resigned McDonagh to improve locker room leadership and make the Defense better. Not only is Mac amazing, he makes Cernak amazing. Without Cernak we really don’t have a solid top 4 defense
