It’s Kyper, so I’ll always take it with a grain of salt, but there are some hefty salaries on this club that put us way closer to the cap ceiling than a team of this caliber should be. And I think DW alluded to that in some interviews after his hiring.

I still think this team will spend money so we shouldn’t worry. I think the future of the team are all on ELCs and we need to get some contracts off the book so we can pay them

I mean Waddell has said we have some contracts to clean up. So yea. There’s no reason to carry a large payroll for dude’s that don’t produce or block the way of our prospects

I have a hard time believing that a podcast about the Leafs would know about this first

CBJ did a lot to try and avoid a real rebuild. Probably too late to do it now, but you can do a lot, and put yourself in a better salary cap position when guys like Fantilli, Johnson, and Jirichek are ready for the playoffs.

I mean we are trading Laine and his $9.1M salary so that’s already a massive reduction.

But also I really really hope the rumor is real and Waddell also finds a way to trade Severson and Elvis without retaining too much or having to sweeten the pot too much with draft picks/prospects.

I mean, Laine is on the move, Elvis might be too, and now there is a chance Gudbranson is moved or bought out. Why spend to the cap if we are nowhere near being a playoff team?

I wouldn’t be shocked if Elvis, Provorov, and Boqvist in any combination were shipped out to make roster space and to give the RFA signings a little more wiggle room.

Reducing payroll in a salary cap league is so lame

Welp, can’t imagine ownership is thrilled about spending to the cap , and being at the bottom of the standings . Makes sense ..

Well Laine is $9M off the top so I can’t imagine much else.

Which contracts are the worst offenders? We already know Laine is being traded, so that’s $8.7mil freed up. Merzlikins is a bad contract at $5.4mil x 3 years left. Provorov’s contract is fine since it expires in a year, I imagine he’ll be involved in a trade deadline deal. Gudbranson is a bad contract at $4mil x 2 years left, it’ll be hard to move without taking a big loss. Severson’s term is bad but I don’t think the money is terrible yet. Other than that, Sean Kuraly makes $2.5mil to be a 4C which isn’t great but he’s the fourth highest paid forward.

I realize we have quite a few RFA’s to bring back so our remaining cap space is gonna evaporate pretty quick. KJ, Chinakhov, Marchenko, Sillinger, Texier, and Bean all probably come back. Let Nylander and Meyer walk
