La tristement célèbre fin de la finale de la Coupe Stanley 1999.
Maintenant, avant que tout le monde ne s’enthousiasme, il y a quelques points clés que peu de gens connaissent.
J’ai récemment regardé une mise en ligne de l’intégralité de l’émission sur YouTube, et pendant la célébration des Stars, un représentant des officiels/règles de la ligue, Brian Lewis, était à l’arène et est venu à l’émission pour expliquer :
Brett Hull, le joueur attaquant, a conservé la possession alors que son pied était dans l’enceinte. C’était après un amendement de mi-saison à la règle de l’enceinte, alors que les joueurs patinaient jusqu’au bout sur des buts vides/d’assurance, seulement pour se voir faire signe alors qu’ils entraient dans l’enceinte. Selon l’amendement et les règles officielles de l’époque, c’était en fait un bon objectif.
La règle du pli et ses changements ont été une saga déroutante dans la LNH et la règle a depuis longtemps été supprimée.
Les fans des Sabres scanderont pour toujours « No Goal ! » et on ne peut vraiment pas leur en vouloir. C’est une horrible façon de perdre en finale après tout le drame avec la règle du pli.
L’autre chose que beaucoup de gens semblent oublier, ou peut-être même ignorer, c’est qu’il s’agissait du match 6. Et si Hull n’avait pas marqué, mais qu’un autre Star l’avait fait de manière plus concise ? Comment savons-nous que Buffalo aurait marqué et forcé un match 7 ? Et comment savoir qui aurait gagné ledit hypothétique Game 7 ? Il y a trop d’autres facteurs pour proclamer que les Sabres auraient gagné la Coupe.

Side note: The Buffalo Bills had lost back to back Super Bowls to the Dallas Cowboys earlier that very decade, so Buffalo sports fans were already steamed with Dallas.

I was 11 and had fallen asleep on the floor as the overtime’s went on. I woke up to my dad screaming, I instantly jumped up and threw my hands into the air in celebration, then asked my dad what just happened. A moment I will never forget.

I’m not a fan of either team, but I feel the Sabers were robbed. ‘Maintaining possession’ had not been strictly applied all year, and the league only has themselves to blame for this fiasco.
Thanks for adding the good goal context in your OP. It often gets lost when people just want to punch air and yell « NO GOAL », but by all intents and purposes, it was a good goal since Hull maintained possession from his initial shot until he ended it.
I was 14 when my Dad took me to that game with my best friend and my little brother, My brother fell asleep somewhere in the 2nd overtime. Still bitter and heartbroken over that. NO GOAL!

Wow, that 1999 Sabres team did not have any star players outside of Hasek. The only other players I remember are Peca and Satan.
If Hasek was a few years younger, his prime would have overlapped with the stacked mid-2000s Sabres, which had Briere, Drury, Vanek, Campbell, etc. Though Ryan Miller was very good as well, too.
Ok now I feel old.
My dad was furious, he was a big Hasek fan. That cup is the first cup that I remember vividly. I was rooting for the stars, Modano and Belfour were awesome.
Ah yes. Dallas’ stolen cup. Let’s make a rule, call it religiously all season, except the most important time in the entire season. You’ve got half your body in the crease… Good goal!
