Shade under $8M for a goaltending duo is perfectly fine if you can get above average play from them. Definite if with this tandem, though.

  2. Cassady57

This has to mean that Jarry is traded, right? 7.5 mil against the cap for two (both good but not elite) goalies is…a lot

  3. danstymusic

That’s a great deal! Did not expect to see him sign this offseason. Especially for a relatively low price.

  4. rageharles

wow i fully thought he was gone in favor of reshuffling journeyman depth players. love to see this

  5. nakon14

Did NOT expect this, very sick

Interested to see now if Jarry gets shopped at all

  6. Aabelke

I am so hard right now. I’m actually surprised that the Pens were able to resign him.

In a vacuum I like this. In practicality though that’s a lot for a goalie tandem where one of the guys isn’t an out and out stud. I’m fine with Ned, but I firmly believe Jarry is simply not capable of being a go to NHL goalie. The sample is large enough to draw that conclusion.

  8. To be honest I’d be fine with a Jarry cap dump at this point. I don’t love having $8 mil tied up in two guys I don’t fully trust. Ned and a young guy or another solid 1B type would be fine if it cost less and we could reallocate that money elsewhere.

This is awesome! I would guess Dubas is going to take calls on Jarry

  10. deekins

Hmm. I’m in the minority but could have done without this deal. Not a huge cap hit though and it definitely seemed like the team battled behind him.

  11. This means nothing regarding Jarry. The only thing this means is we’re not seeing Blomqvist this year unless there’s an injury.

  12. Cheeks_Klapanen

That’s about as high as I would have gone for him. Kind of confirms Blomqvist is staying in WBS for at least another year, but that’s fine. A little extra seasoning never hurt anybody.

  13. YourS_E_N_S_E_I

So I’m not anti or pro Jarry, I’m perfectly neutral. But I kind of thought that he would be teamed up with Blomqvist here soon. Now I think, especially with the rumors they weren’t happy with Jarry at the end of the year, that maybe there’s a real possibility they look to trade him.

  14. sextoymagic

Hell yeah! Blocks Bloom sadly. But maybe a Jarry trade comes.

  15. BeansTheCoach

Fantastic deal, so glad he’s staying.

  16. Freedjet27

I can’t express how good this move is. He’s such a solid goalie in a league where having a good pairing is almost near impossible. At 2.5M for 2 years???? What a steal.

  17. XGuiltyofBeingMikeX

    Fuck, that’s such a deal.

Also, seeing what goalies have gone for in the past two days…it’s now or never to move Jarry. He’s worth more than the other two guys who just got traded

  18. Love this, absolutely love this. Welcome back Ned !!!

  19. Kadaththeninja_

Wow I’m honestly surprised he didn’t wait for like a 3×3.5 or something, nice to hear he’s staying

  20. _nopucksgiven

Really shocked he signed for $2.5 I thought for sure he could’ve got 3-3.5 in free agency

  21. Competitive_Eye_8699

Hopefully this means that Jarry is gone. He is a head case who craps his pants in big moments, Jarry never fails to let the pens down when they need him the most. I like the Ned deal, however he is not a sure number one we need a trustworthy goalie to be in a tandem with him.

  22. This makes Yohe’s article today not look great.

  23. itsmnemotime

Jarry heading to columbus as part of a laine deal

  24. Steaknkidney45

Ned was a good addition. That late season surge undoubtedly clinched it.

  25. SnooCaterpillar

That’s cheaper then I was expecting

  26. HooHooHaHa

Have nothing against Jarry but this move means you almost have to move him to have cap space to fill out other needs in the lineup

  27. StevenWasADiver

    I’m so glad

    He deserves to stay

  28. Super good deal

These type of contracts ultimately likely the second best type of goalie contracts in the league, behind the 5M$ ullmark ones

Cap hits around 10M $ usually a mixed bag

  29. Sea_Blah

Ive seen zero talk about Jarry potentially being moved except from Pens fans. Hes objectively better than Markstrom, but on a worse contract at 4 years. Doubt he gets moved unless its a hockey trade and we gamble on another player probably also on a bad contract

  30. bigsquib68

This is a great signing. From the looks of the other comments it seems I’m in the minority but I think keeping Jarry and playing these guys as a 1A/1B tandem is better than shipping Jarry. Both guys played well last year in a similar role and I believe it’s in large part because they were getting good rest. Ned hasn’t proven he can be the guy yet (although I think he is capable).

  31. IrishTiger89

What the heck are they going to do with Blomqvist if he is not going to be in the top 2 the next 2 years? He’s about the most NHL ready prospect we have

  32. CynicWalnut

I hope we stick with Jarry and Ned and here’s why.

Everyone wants the Nedquist combo because new guy and we don’t like Jarry for various reasons. But this is the same thing we did when we put all our money on Murray.

We put a new shining goaltender into the fire as the starter after he won back to back cups (which makes sense on paper) but we forget that our defense played some of the best defense we’ve ever seen out of the pens D in years! They absolutely shut down the other teams. From when Flower got pulled against the senators to our second cup win (only in the playoffs games)

Then Murray started slipping in performance and Jarry started getting more starts and was playing great! Yay!

So we moved Murray and made Jarry our starter with a mix of backups. Except we didn’t have a lights out performance from our defense to make up for Jarry’s lack of experience mixed with our aging core. But we still looked great against the rangers until Crosby got injured.

So now we have Jarry slipping and we’re trying to move Ned into the starter role with Blomquist as backup.

Do we see the pattern here?

We have two pretty decent goalies that aren’t insane game stealers, but can keep us afloat when needed. But our defense is still super questionable and our bottom 6 is inconsistent. We looked good at the end of the season, but who knows what that’ll be like starting the next season.

Maybe our power play will do something this year. Maybe our defense will play defense? Who knows? But I think our goalie TANDEM we know what we’re going to get and it looks promising if we don’t overwork them. We’ve got a new defensive coach and powerplay coach starting next season so I think we see where that goes before we start repeating the same mistakes we’ve been making for the last 8 years.

And I think Sullivan should have the hottest seat out there.
