    >“I was surprised that they kept [Ilya] Samsonov in for that many games against us in the playoffs,” said Ullmark. “I felt that every time we played the Leafs and he [Joseph Woll] was in net, it felt like it was more of a challenge even though I’m not a player. Just watching him, it looked like he was in so much more control of the situation that was thrown at him.”

    >“As a goalie and the players as well, they feed off of these things. If they see a guy that may be flopping around a little bit too much or leaving out crazy rebounds, feeling that you always have to struggle with it, then you get a little bit more on edge compared to if you have a goaltender that contains the puck or puts pucks in areas that are not a threat,” Ullmark explained.

Well then come on down and show us how it’s done Linus!

  3. Yes and no. Joseph Woll was not good coming back from injury right up until the end of the season. Samsonov until the last week of the season was playing better. I am a bit surprised that we stuck with Sammy as long as we did though. He was giving up back breaking goals with bad positioning.

So another coaching fail you say

This is harsh but the exact truth. The team just plays better in front of Woll. I do believe we win game 7 with Woll in net. Not because Sammy was bad, because he played well. But because the team started playing differently.

Dumping on another active goalie is crazy…. I’ve never seen that. He’s absolutely right, though. Keefe’s biggest and most unexpected flaw was that he was even more stubborn than Babcock with roster decisions.

    I love unfiltered Swedes.

To be fair as well, Woll had a high ankle sprain and missed a lot of games. based on the fact he twisted something at the end of game 6, makes me think he was still injured.

  8. BayStreetGuy

Where are all the Sammy defenders? He would let in 1 bad goal every game but he somehow not to blame according to them.

  9. GritGrinder

I was thinking the same thing as a leaf fan, but I think woll had some injury issues going on if I remember correctly.

  10. thisisdu

He’s just upset that he got pulled after every time he lost a game and Samsonov didn’t.

linus rode the bench all but one game in the playoffs, stfu.

  12. Takhar7

Hilarious – a decade into the Shanaplan, and this team is the laughing stock of the league. Just openly being mocked by other teams and players now.

  13. Mashdrop

Says the guy sitting on the bench all playoffs because Swayman took his job.

  14. Samurai1221

Scumbag for saying that 10 days before free agency while Sammy tries to find a job and move his young family. Completely one hundred percent accurate, but not good form imo.

Idk. I get starting the series with him because he had been the starter all year. Then he was great in game 2 and the Leafs got the series tied up so I again get starting him for game 3.

I guess game 4 is the one where they could have made a change, but the Leafs were so neutered offensively that it was hard to blame Sammy for much that had happened so for in the series.

I think Sammy was the right choice to START the playoffs. People like to forget, but after he cleared waivers and then returned to the team, the dude was FANTASTIC. Not to mention that when Woll first returned from his own injury, he just wasn’t quite up to his usual level of play in those first few games. Sammy was legitimately performing much better than him at the time.

But I ALSO agree that Woll should have been swapped in sooner. Right around the end of the season, and in those first games of the playoffs, a lot of Sammy’s worst habits were beginning to rear their ugly heads again. The writing on the wall was there that he was slipping again, and they ignored it for too long.

When the other team is happy they’re playing Samsonov maybe Keefe was starting the wrong goalie.

  18. thistreestands

And that’s why Keefe is in Jersey

  19. BORT_licenceplate27

I feel like they kept Sammy in max 1 game more than they should have. So this is a bit overblown.

Game 1: he was the better goalie down the stretch, there wasn’t much of a debate he should start game 1.

Game 2: he was bad the first game but it’s fair to give him a second shot, the whole team was bad game 1.

Game 3: he won game 2 and looked good. Giving him the start makes sense.

Game 4: you could/should have gone to Woll here.

    Games 5, 6. Woll played

    Game 7, Woll was injured

  20. TheCarrier89

He’s not exactly wrong but that’s kind of a wild thing to say publicly about an active goaltender, especially coming from someone who only played one game that series and lost.

  21. RicoFerret44

More copium for leaf fans 😂😂😂

  22. autoIyse

This sub would be in shambles if recency bias wasn’t overshadowing all of r/leafs continuous defending of samsonov from the first collapse in October all the way up to game 7.
