At face value this makes no sense. Other than cap relief. Just shaking my head

Obviously making room because Yzerman has something brewing!

Seems like something else has to be happening later. Otherwise, this makes no sense. Doesn’t bode well for trying to offload any of the not so nice contracts. Walman’s contract didn’t seem bad at all and to give up him and a second for “future considerations” is just confusing. If no one was willing to take him for free then there really shouldn’t be anyone taking on bad contracts this summer.

Unless Stevie has some massive extensions and UFA signings coming today this feels bizarre and unnecessary…

Like even if you have large extensions penciled in for mo and Raymond I just don’t see how you can’t afford to sit on him a little longer and shop him around a bit. Surely *someone* would have been willing to take him off your hands

I did see a thing about career altering injuries soon to come out for him, but that’s far from factual at this point and frankly the only thing I could see making this trade make sense 😂

Making room for stamkos maybe? This trade seemingly makes no sense

This is the definition of a domino, we shall see what this is about in time. Gotta be clearing cap or a request

Granted, I only checked capfriendly.com briefly, but it looks like lots of spots need to be filled with 6 forward and 4 defensemen currently under contract. StevieY got a lot of work to do.

Yzerman must’ve just returned from a trip to BC, because he’s smoking some good stuff today.

Walkman the hockey player is worth his contract. What is Yzerman doing or what the hell did Walkman do?

  10. Additional-Emu3082

Yzerman’s plan in detroit is to be average and get the 15th pick in the draft.

    Brilliant.

So resigning Kane, bringing up some D prospects, and Mo and Ray are close to big 8 year deals?

Walman is a defensive liability imo. It would seem that mgmt knows what they are doing tho. 🫡Y

Grier just spending the summer being the coyotes in their absence.

Mr. Future Considerations sure makes his way around the league

Getting ready for one of Necas or Guentzel

The hope is that Yzerman makes such a huge deal with the freed up cap space that we are all so excited about it and forget this is what it took.

I like Walman; and, yes, I’m a bit confused why we had to give up a draft pick to trade him. The only thing I can think of is that it was a limited market because most teams have their own salary cap issues. The teams that had the cap room to trade for him don’t really need a player like Walman because they’re rebuilding and he’s going to age out by the time they are ready to win.

However, I just did a deeper dive into his stats. He is incredibly average, or below average, for a lot of the stats they track. The one thing he has going for him is his shot speed but that is really the only area where he stands out. Statistically, he’s a replaceable piece that is not going to get the Red Wings out of the mushy middle.

Future considérations must be a real jerks, he seems to get exchanges multiple times a year

Listen. I am perpetually on the ‘trust the Yzerplan’ train but this? This hurts. 😬

3.4m in cap space for a second isn’t terrible. But after this they have around 33m in cap space and only 32 of the 50 contracts allowed, and only 2 RFAs to sign. It doesn’t really add up to me unless Detroit intend to sign 20million in free agents this offseason.

Edit: seems like they traded Gibson (42 overall in 2023) for the second and then flipped it with Walman to the sharks. Still doesn’t make sense to me.

Stevie, you got some ‘splaining to do.
