It costs the Leafs absolutely nothing to put this guy on LTIR…or not sign him. No need to get excited. Whatever the outcome, it will come out by training camp. Settle down
Well if it’s not being discussed there’s probably some legal issues at hand. Perhaps there was some medical information not disclosed. I mean if it is infact a degenerative issue and the medical staff in Toronto wasn’t made aware of that then it may not be something they can repair in a short time frame in Toronto. If the Leafs were instead led to believe that it was an injury that could be repaired in short order, then we may potentially have a contract dispute in progress.
I feel like this is a bet on getting a player for free at the deadline (assuming he can rehab his knee for the later part of the season) by signing him early. The Leafs have no draft capital so this is a way of adding D depth for later and using LTIR to do it. I bet they got him cheap because his contract can't be insured and the Leafs think they can get 1/4 of a season out of him.
It's very difficult to bank cap space throughout the year regardless of your LTIR status because as soon as somebody gets hurt and you have to sign callup a replacement, you're eating into your space. All in all, this is incredibly low risk.
The issue could be more to due with the leafs medical staff then brad. Or it could be very intentional to get him healthy enough to play and then chuck him LTIR
Gee Steve, having guys like Simmons & Kypreos reference unnamed sources about a player's knee injury is standard fare to attract attention. Those sources may in fact have solid info about Hakanpää, or not. The counterpoint that Leaf medical people, including orthopedic knee specialists cleared him, seems to imply the arthoscopic procedure fixed the issue. Maybe he failed a subsequent medical. The Leafs have to respect the privacy of a player, so perhaps they're revisiting the knee issue, in which case a bit of patience is needed.

The fact that they didn't learn from the Klinberg situation is mind blowing. With that said, Steve Simmons is a troll
So glad ur back, those were tough days 🫡
This is a worse roster than last year.

Pretty sure the Islanders PK was worse as far as playoff teams go
But is it really a disaster if he hurt hust goes on LTR and that's it not a big deal
Always a good day when DTSB drops a banger aka analyzing stuff in better detail than the rest of Leafs YouTube

Who else caught the video with Cade Webber referring to Hakanpaa as his coach?
