Naslund was the most underated player in the NHL at the time. The best swedish player that played the game. Those were the days, before the NHL was watered down, and we had teams from Florida? and Anahiem? Money was the only reason the NHL expanded, ofcourse, I'm an old guy, what can you expect.:*(
What's wrong with having teams in cities that aren't hockey traditional areas? Yeah, it's for money, but said teams are starting to gain recognition, especially with places like Anaheim and Carolina winning Cups.
NHL has been watered down a bit, yeah, but it still offers some good hockey, which is what matters.
Näslund the best swedish player?? Think not. What about Håkan Loob, Mats Sundin, Peter Forsberg, Börje Salming, Niklas Lidström, Kent Nilsson, Pelle Lindberg!! They are way better than Näslund!!!!!!!!
To be honest, Although I'm Canadian, I've always had the most respect for Swedish players, because they don't have to be huge, to be good at the game. The question is, who is the best swedish player? I say Naslund, because he pioneered the NHL for the rest of the swedish players, however I am biased, simply because I grew up with Naslund, as my childhood hero, and I'm Canadian…I think that says alot:)
I remember this game like yesterday. I believe it was Game 3. The Canadiens won this game in OT to take a 2-1 series lead, but then the Flames came back to take the series 4-2. This was one of the few series Patrick Roy was outplayed by the opponent goalie. It didn't happen too often in his great career. Mike Vernon was spectacular in goal for Calgary.
Good memory. Its also the only time in the arena's history that an opposing team lifted the Cup in the Montreal Forum…and of course the last all-Canadian Finals to date.
One of the best SC finals in history. Every game a nail biter. I had the priviledge to go to game 4 at the Saddledome. Friggin amazing energy in the place that night!
the '89 flames vs. the '89 canadiens may have been the best matchup ever in the stanley cup finals. those teams were so great that year. this is the first year i watched hockey, and it was a great, great year. lemieux, yzerman, gretzky. it was awesome.
this was a great year..not only did the league have great players..like Lemieux, Gretzky, Yzerman, Roy, Messier, Coffey, McDonald…etc…but it had all the classic teams in the league, like Winnipeg Jets, Hartford Whalers, and Quebec Nordiques….
It was nice to see the Flames win…
I can't seem to find the overtime goal by Ryan Walter in this game 3 of the 1989 playoffs…it was Montreal's last time winning a game ….great series and could've gone either way.
@guspappas1
Yeah, I've tried to find this, too; I know NHL Network has show this entire game (for their "Vintage Games" series), but there doesn't seem to be any clip of it.
@idster7 Winning % wise, before the day of OT losses and shootouts, it's the best clash of teams in the last 32 years, since Boston and Montreal in 1978. The Flames won 54 of 80 games without the shootout or OT loss stat. If they had the SO, 9 of their games could've gotten them an extra point. Habs won 53 meanwhile and also had 9 ties. Let's say both won 7 of 9 shootouts and you add 2 games to make 82 like today and count 3 points from them. That's 125 for MTL and 127 for CGY in today's NHL.
This was the best years in hockey. Both of these teams were stacked with star players. The Edmonton Oilers with the stacked team they had were not in the finals this year. That tells you how good these two teams were. Todays NHL is watered down…way too many teams and players. I say go back to 20 teams at the most.
i was 14 when i watched this series as a flames fan.
I still remember when they won the cup lik it was yesterday.
My question is ,
did they even show this on american tv?> The ratings must have been terrible there, lol

What a fu%$in series that was…Legendary! We won it right in the "Cathedral" of hockey itself, dudes : The ole Forum.
@Snapscape Because they didn't lose it. They won in double OT to take a 2-1 series lead but then dropped the next 3.

Bring back the years when Canadian teams dominated the League and the playoffs!
One of the best SC finals EVER!!!! Two AMAZING teams at the top of their games. If im not wrong they were both 1 and 2 during the regular season.
They were 1 and 2…
Still to this day it's the Flames best season… 54-17-9 117 points, won the cup…
By the way this is game 3, Montreal won in Double OT, Calgary didn't lose again in the series after this
