I don’t know why media asks these questions.

King shit. Let’s go win a fucking cup, boys.

Auston is also the first Leafs captain to be drafted by the team since…Wendel?

This isn’t a knock, but this is clearly platitudinous when he signed a 4-year extension last season and could obviously have gone with longer term if he wanted. Not that he had any great options for what to publicly say on this subject.

Then why didn’t you sign an eight year deal sir?

I think Auston knows that Cup or not, playoff success or not, if he stays with the team for his whole career his number is getting retired and he’s a Leaf legend forever. He could leave the team after his contract expires and chase a Cup if we don’t get one, but shit happens. There are no guarantees because you can’t win it yourself. Except for his legacy in Toronto if he stays.

And when he leaves after his contract is up?

I know this sounds good but even though he said that’s the goal, he didn’t exactly sound as committed as this quote would indicate. It very much sounded like it depends on winning and other factors that could come in to play in the future. However, I understand why the media asks about this, but let’s just enjoy Matthews every minute that he’s here, rather than frequently questioning his commitment to our team.
