  1. Also, the more I watch these games I give less credence to the majority who say that NJ stifled DET. Maybe a little but Vernon was just god awful in this series. At some point you need a friggin save. Least an initial save. Itz only game 2 + I’ve seen 3 pitiful NJ goals on weeny shots. (Richer, McLean)

  2. Welppp onto GM 4 now — 1 shot 1 goal. A bad 1 too! I can’t say it enough…VERNON was fuxking TRASH this whole fucking series! Ugh. So bad. Scotty shoulda started oZzie for real! Coffey was old + on one leg too Which is why Scotty shipped em to Hartford next season for Shanny!

  3. I remember this and I told everyone the Devil's were going to win..and sweep the Red Wings..no one believed me and I was so happy for my NJ boys… unfortunately, I missed seeing it live, but it was still awesome..Go Devil's..

  4. Dear Lord the Red WIngs were STACKED! I forgot how good those teams with Fed, Yzerman, and Kozlov were..

  5. I’m a Ranger fan, but the Islanders are my 2nd favorite Devils are my 3rd favorite team. The 3 teams that I hate are the Flyers, the Capitals and the Hurricanes. I need to admit that if Brodeur had not given up those 2 goals in game 3 of that 1995 Stanley Cup Final, he might’ve won the Conn Smythe trophy. You’re right, it was expected to be a cakewalk for Detroit, but instead, luckily, it was a cakewalk for New Jersey. Also, in the 95 ECF, instead of winning games 1 & 2 in Philly, the Devils should’ve won games 3 & 4 in Continental Airlines Arena. This means that instead of the road team winning the 1st 4 games that series, it’s the home team who wins the 1st 4 games that series, which means that the Devils end that postseason with an 8-game winning streak, instead of that 6-game winning streak that they had.

  6. i was a newcomer in Canada 2 years in and saw hockey and fell in love with it because of its physicality.
i became a leafs fan…. always was but now i'm not..it's just ridiculous with what's happened with the league… the Stevens' hit on Kozlov is what made me become a Stevens fan… i didn't know much about the devils but i knew Detroit was a superpower scoring machine, i thought it would be cake walk for them but damn ….Stevens sure had other things in mind…. it was an unbelievable series….

  7. vernon looked and played like complete different goalie from when he was on flames guess it was the different helmet and pads but he also played different style of goal not as acrobatic as he was in calgary here he is more of stand up play the angles type goalie

  8. Im from PA but the devils earned this one. Nobody thought they had a chance. I remember staying up late and ngl shed a few tears when they won.

  9. Great video. The stevens hit on kozlov was the turning point of the series. That was when the red wings were truly broken. I think that scared a lot of the guys on the wings bench, and they played differently

  10. Poor Paul Coffey. In game 2 he was on the ice for all the Devils goals and was beaten or made a bad read on pretty much all of them. One of the all-time great defenders though

  11. What is ironic is that the Avalanche would later trade Lemieux back to the Devils. And he would win another Stanley Cup.

  12. Not only did former Hab Richer score in Game 1.
Another member of that 89 Montreal team, Claude Lemieux, scored the winner.

Montreal's trade of Claude Lemieux is a candidate for their worst trade of all time!

Although there was an off ice reason for the trade, (Allegedly).

Either way, trades made for non-hockey reasons, are the worst a team can make.

You would have thought Serge Savard was smarter than that but this would not be the last time this happened.

    I don't know who's doing Michael Whalen's research?

Or perhapps Whalen misspoke. He should have said, no team has come back from a 3-0 deficit IN THE FINALS since 1942, because it did happen in a 1975 series between Long Island and Pittsburg, but it was not in the finals.

  14. Man, if Vernon had played like this in 89. Montreal would have won in 5 or 6 games. I remember Vernon stealing game 5, in 89. We had so many chances, Vernon could have won the Conn Smythe, he was that good in 89.

  15. I have no idea what Hockey Guy is talking about, this was absolute hilarious watching stuff that wouldn't be legal today.

Claude's winning goal is nearly a carbon copy of his goal in Game 4 of the 86 finals against Calgary.

The only difference? This puck he received from a Vernon rebound, where the 86 one, was on a pass.

    Both goals game winners
Both goals in the Finals Both goals scored on Vernon, (who beat Montreal in the 89 finals)

The one in 86 put Montreal up 3 to 1 in the Finals, heading to Calgary, where Lemieux won his first cup in his rookie Season.

In 86 he had 10, 4 of them game winners. At least 1 was a series winner against Hartford, in game 7 OT. Of the 2nd round series. The only reason, he did not win the Conn Smythe?

    Patrick Roy did.

Imho, sending Lemieux to the Devils, was the worst trade, (I know of) in Montreal's History.

    Cheers from Montreal Quebec Canada.

P.S. In a seperate trade, we gave them Richer but got Kirk Muller, who helped us win the 93 Cup.

We also included Tom Chorske in this, or another deal.

Finally, Brodeur was drafted 22 overall, I beleive. So every team passed on him but Montreal picked 16th in that draft and Chose "HOFer" lol. Turner Stephenson.

Plus Coach Jacques Lemaire but I'll leave his story for someone else to tell 🙂

Man, that song by Gary Gutter z(Glitter) is still one of the best 'jock jams of all time!!!

Too bad the "man" himself turned out to be a piece of trash!!

  18. 33:50

Rare mistake by Michael Whalen. He should have said,

'No team in the final has come back from 3-0,
    besides the 42 Leafs.'

The 3-0 comeback was accomplished in 1975, with the Pens and Isles but it was in the Quarter finals and the Islanders won!

Sorry Mike. Maybe they cut off the key word and made you look wrong but normally, you were dead on, a real asset to TSN, for many years!

    Cheers

P.S. The Islanders almost pulled it off, in back to back series' They lost the first 3 in the next series and took it to 7 again!!
This time they lost in 7.

Talk about foreshadowing a future dynasty, or a team that has a bad memory! LoL

  19. Loved the Crash Line. Actually ended up getting both a Mike Peluso and a Randy McKay jersey. Those 2 and Holik were incredible on both ends of the ice. Devils were a true 4 line team in the playoffs

  20. That team was the embodiment of the word team. Every line had a purpose and they were the first team in history to have a fourth line play as much as theirs did. Deep solid team with a great goalie with great coaches. Underrated team. They went 16 and 4 in the playoffs. One of the best records.
