Rutger going to the AHL would really be a product of an overcrowded camp. If he's AHL bound because of his first period last night, then so should Noel Acciari for the full 60 minutes. There's too many guaranteed roster spots for NHL vets that don't have the jam that Rutger is capable of.
Bryan Rust started the 2015-16 season in the AHL … played 16 games there. Jake Guentzel started the 2016-17 season in the AHL … played 33 games there. Starting the season in the AHL isn't the end of the world.
Not sure exactly which game Bunting and Malkin started playing together on a line, but Malkin finished the season with 8 goals over the last 11 games when Bunting was definitely on his line … I think we would all take that.
And if you're into analytics:
Malkin's xGF% with Bunting: 56.5%
Malkin's xGF% without Bunting: 41.9%
So yeah, I would say that at least last season Bunting was a pretty good winger for Malkin. The guy who was actually the worst winger for Malkin last season … for whatever reason … was Drew O'Connor (xGF% of 45% when together; xGF% of 55% when they were away from each other).
Not that I want anybody on the roster to get hurt, but I hope McG is on the short list to be called up from W-B.
Rutger McGroarty, Love to hear his passing is accurate. If his shots are the same, and he gets his chance, I mean later on, when he is ready. He very well could be an asset to the team. Thank you DK for all you do.
