Fredrik Elias Pettersson was born in Sundsvall, Sweden on November 12, 1998. Although Pettersson was born in Sundsvall, he grew up in a small community called Ånge. He started playing hockey as early as 3-years old. Pettersson’s father was a zamboni driver for the local hockey arena, so he was fortunate to get opportunities for extra ice time while growing up. Him and his brother Emil both played for Ånges IK’s youth team. By the time Pettersson was in Grade 8, he started playing with Timrå HK’s U15 team. Pettersson commuted 100+km’s multiple times a week for practices and games before eventually moving closer to Timrå.
Pettersson made his professional debut in the HockeyAllsvenskan with Timrå IK during the 2015-16 season. At 17-18 years old Pettersson played 25 games and registered 3 goals and 9 points. In 2016-17, Pettersson found his stride and exploded offensively with 19 goals and 40 points in 43 games. Following the season, Pettersson signed a three-year contract with the Växjö Lakers of the SHL.
Before Pettersson played for Växjö, he was eligible to be selected in the NHL Draft. Despite playing in the HockeyAllsvenskan, which was rare for top Swedish prospects, Pettersson ranked 2nd amongst European skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau. The Vancouver Canucks selected Pettersson 5th overall.
After being drafted, Pettersson continued to dominate in Sweden. In his first season playing in the SHL, Pettersson led the league with 24 goals and 56 points through 44 games. Pettersson continued his dominant performance in the playoffs with 10 goals and 19 points in 10 games to help secure the Le Mat Trophy for the Lakers. That season, Pettersson broke Kent Nilsson’s record for most points by a junior in the SHL which stood since 1976. Pettersson was also recognized as Playoffs MVP, Rookie of the Year, and Forward of the Year at the conclusion of the SHL season.
With nothing left to prove in Sweden, Pettersson agreed to an entry-level contract with the Canucks on May 25, 2018. Pettersson played his first NHL game at home against the Calgary Flames where he dazzled and sniped his first career goal past Mike Smith. In his sophomore season, Pettersson played on the top line with JT Miller and Brock Boeser to form the lotto line. The trio had immediate offensive success and was one of the top lines in the NHL that season. Pettersson was once again nominated for the NHL All-Star Game along with teammates Jacob Markstrom & Quinn Hughes. With COVID, shutting down the season, Pettersson’s regular season totals were halted at 66 points in 68 games. Pettersson continued to produce in the bubble playoffs and registered 7 goals and 18 points in 17 playoff games.
The North Division year was Pettersson’s worst of his career. His season was shortened due to an upper body injury and he managed to play in just 26 games while registering 10 goals and 21 points. Following the season, Pettersson was due for a new contract and held out of training camp and the pre-season in hopes of securing an extension. While holding out alongside Quinn Hughes, Pettersson secured his bridge extension on October 1st and signed for three years valued at $22.05-Million. That season, Pettersson had a 5 point night against the Seattle Kraken and he surpassed Alex Mogilny for the franchise record for most 5 point games as a Canuck. Pettersson set a career-high 32 goals that season and had 68 total points in 80 games.
While Vancouver was not good in the 2022-23 season, Pettersson took his play to a new level and he set the league on fire with 39 goals and 102 points in 80-games. While he did not win any league awards, he finished in the Top 10 for Selke and Lady Byng voting and 18th for the Hart Memorial Trophy. He was also 10th in the league for scoring.
Last season, Pettersson was in the final year of his contract. Pettersson made it clear early in the year that he wanted to focus on his play during the season and deal with his contract at a later point. There was a lot of tension between fans and the media with circulating rumors and criticism of Pettersson’s play throughout the 2023-24 season. As the trade deadline was approaching, Vancouver’s management group was getting frustrated by the lack of progress in negotiations. There was an alleged trade offer on the table for Vancouver to move Pettersson to Carolina should he not want to extend in Vancouver. Pettersson’s hand was somewhat forced and the two sides came to the negotiating table and hammered out an 8-year extension valued at $92.8-Million on March 2nd.

Words cannot describe how much love I have for this man. Have a feeling he’s itching to tear it up again after struggling with his injury second-half of last season. Definitely breaking into the top 10 all time this year and most likely surpassing Bure for 7th.
