I escaped Long Island NY in 1996. As a former player who was at one time considered a top prospect (until two back to back knee injuries and being short) some knew who I was. (I was surprised as well😂). I was invited to coach with the staff in the learn to play program at the Raleigh ice plex. Yes I was a Ranger fan who at one time had a contract with the NJ Devils. But the Whalers were my dad’s favorite team and my second favorite team so I was excited when the Canes moved here.
After that I started my own power skating class at Raleigh Iceplex. I began coaching youth hockey shortly after moving to the Triangle. It was very different. RYH was somewhat jaded as they were doing some shady stuff like stacking their best players on every team. I knew this because they were in my power skating class. But now youth hockey is very strong in the Triangle. As a kid growing up in NY playing in that system I would say Raleigh has surpassed what I experienced.
You now also have top shelf youth camps that come here to N.C. top shelf coaches as well.
I was so glad to be a part of getting Hockey Ministries International hockey camp to Raleigh in 2008. As a kid I attended those camps and moved on to councilor, pro, power skating coach.
It all started with myself and at the time the Canes HMI Chaplain having lunch in a Bo Jangles next to the Saturn dealership on Capital Blvd. We formed a committee to prove the camp would work in the south. First camp was summer of 2008 with Glenn Wesley. The camp did so good that HMI now also has camps in Fl and TX.
Jaccob Slavin and Chatty are the newer pros that coach with us in Raleigh.
It used to be hard during March Madness to get the kids focused. That is no longer an issue.
I love hockey and love seeing how much it has grown in this area.
Shane is a huge part of the youth success!!!
