It’s good he’s going where he feels comfortable but I’d say the Griffins are going to be a contender this season too. So wherever he went he was going to be on a very good team.

Probably because they potentially wanted him on the team next year, and with most SHL guys it takes a year + to get acclimated to the smaller ice and North American style of game. They probably wanted to accelerate that process but I get why MBN would want to stay in Sweden.

Him staying another year in Sweden doesn’t hurt us. We’re still pretty jammed to step into the big club. Sounds like they’ve identified what he needs to work on and expect him state side next season.
Tell ya what though, Griffins games haven’t been this much fun in years.

SHL season is only like 50 games, right? So in theory he could finish his season there and then come to Grand Rapids for the end of the season and (hopefully) the playoffs?

I don’t think « what sounds like a fairly tense meeting » is correct, maybe it was lost in translation from a joke the podcaster made about how by choosing the SHL he gave the finger to *the* Steve Yzerman. MBN says it was resolved well.
He says they told him that it was his choice but that they would prefer to have him in the AHL, but he thought the right move would be to first take the next step to the SHL and then come over next year. He mentions the fact that Skellefteå won last year and has practically kept that whole team intact as a motivator too – the fact that he’ll have a good chance to win a championship or at least be at the top level in europe before going over. (I think people forget that he hasn’t played in the highest league in sweden yet). Staying another year also means he’ll get to visit home a lot more and then have ASP as a teammate and friend going over.
