Sean Avery hates just about every Ranger, this isn’t news. He’s kind of miserable to listen to.

  2. I can’t believe we’re doing this 3 games in. Avery is a clown. Mika will be fine.

  3. StrikerBall1945

Avery can go fuck right off. Mika’s doing nothing? It’s game 4 tonight, and Mika doesn’t have a bazillion goals. That’s not enough for him, apparently. Wanna talk about doing nothing? What about how Avery trolled Brodeur because Avery couldn’t do jack shit on the ice. Get the fuck outta here with your bullshit Sean.

  4. BeesVBeads

70-80 points a season, positive FO%, plays strong on the PK, plays on PP1. I’ll take that all day. What did Avery ever do even close to that?

Mika has been a strong back checker but his offense is falling off a cliff. He used to drive play and was a dangerous offensive player. His offensive game has slipped a lot from where it was 3 or so years ago. His contract is going to age very badly. Some guys really decline after 30/31 years of age….Brad Richards comes to mind. Mika might be another.

As much as I love Mika these last couple of games have not been great for him, less the 3rd period of the last game. I hope he just needed to wake up and get some confidence back.

Avery is right. Zibanejad seems to have forgotten how to shoot. He has made some of the most boneheaded decisions I’ve ever seen since last year, including in the playoffs. The guy needs to get his head right if this team wants to win it all.

  8. shredmasterJ

Yawn. Washed up hockey player trying to get his 15min back.

  9. To be fair there have been multiple times through three games that Mika looks lethargic, disengaged, and is constantly gliding around the rink. I know it’s early but NYR can really use a bounce back year from him.

Still can’t believe there isn’t better podcast options for one of the most popular teams in the league in the biggest market

What exactly is it that Avery wants Zibanejad to be doing?

It’s a power play. After the face-off he’s at the point. Then he shifts down to the face-off circle where Avery complains he’s wants « easy backdoor plays »? Yeah, man. That move is called The New York Rangers Power Play For The Last Four Years and isn’t exactly novel. It tends to end in One Timer From The Dot or Chris Kreider Tip In Goal and it works pretty well.

Yeah, he coughed up the puck down low and that’s a demerit. But what else is there to even criticize here?

  12. He’s not wrong about Mika. Heard his interview with Blueshirts Breakaway and he had some pretty bad takes. Chytil is definitely an NHL player and is fine based on where he was drafted and what he has become.

He is old fashioned about how an NHL team needs to be built. He feels like the bottom 6 should be full of grinders who check and play hard. While that’s not wrong, the NHL is much more skilled now than 25 years ago. In the past, your 3rd line was your checking line. Now your 4th line is kind of your checking line.

Sean Avery is not the right messenger but the message itself isn’t all wrong. He rarely drives play anymore on offense, his one timer on the PP is almost a parody at this point with how off angled he is now, disappeared in the last 2 playoff rounds last year, no showed in 2023 and bitched out of fighting for a puck against Sam Bennet last year…..with our goal empty….and faked an injury instead.

The man 10000% should be open to criticism on all sorts of fronts

  14. DrRafaelPenguin

He’s not wrong. Every time he gets the puck on the Power Play it’s either a shot wide that goes all the way around the boards and clears the zone, a shot pass to Kreider that inevitably misses or he gives the puck away along the boards.

He’s killing this team and needs to be much better. I’m not going to get on him too much this early in the season, but it’s disturbing to see him start the season this way given how bad he was last season given his standards and what he’s being paid.

I guess most don’t debate that Mika can play hockey pretty darn good when he’s on. Even if he doesn’t light up the scoresheet rn and got icecold in round 2 of the playoffs you can still see that his hockeyIQ is there.
He also got a 1yr old at home which may or may not have impacted him, you don’t give up fast on a player of his caliber. He’s going to go on a heater soon enough and then these discussions will quiet down, until his next dryspell at least 😄

  16. Zero-jiggler

I mean, Avery is a clown but Mika isn’t and hasn’t been fine. Especially considering playoff performances.

  17. InevitableHome343

I’m down on Mika from his history of no-showing in the playoffs.
But I know Mika is elite talent

But aves had so many L takes (he didn’t know who chytil was?!) that the interview was unlistenable

  18. QuickRelease10

I love Zibanejad, even have his jersey, but I agree with Avery.

Zibanejad is talented, so he’ll get his points, but his play 5v5 is not good enough. He keeps getting fed these RWers and none of them work. At some point it’s on him.

  19. A sample size of 3 games does not a season make. Zibanejad is in the 3rd year of an 8 year contract is the scariest part of the article.
